Home > Gaillardia
Gaillardia pulchella is a Blanket flower species that grows from 8 to 24 inches tall, the cultivars produce rounded clumps of low growing, hairy, divided leaves and semi-upright flowering stems that end with single, semi-double, or double flower heads. Plants have a long bloom period, flowering throughout the summer; the two- to three-inch-wide flowers come predominantly in shades of yellow, orange, red, and bicolors. The cultivars with longer stems make excellent, long-lasting cut flowers. The showy flower heads are very attractive and they are loved by butterflies also. This annual or short-lived perennial often reseeds. Plants grow best in dry locations with good drainage, in nitrogen poor soils, in full sun. Wet soils produce root rot and shade produce plants that flop and flower poorly.
