'Bloody Cranes Bill'

10 to 24 inch wide clumps with nicely attractive foliage that is topped off with 1.5 inch round cup like flowers of bright rosy-purple coloration. This species forms slowly spreading clumps that develop into very attractive carpets of six to ten inch tall foliage with showy flowers interspersed just above the foliage. Long blooming from mid spring to mid summer. Great used as an edging or used intermixed with large rocks. Sow in moist medium and put in the fridge for four weeks. Germination in 3-100 days at F 65. I sow mine in a bag as above but leave the seed in my cold fridge (33-35F) until the seed starts to germinate: about two months, once seedlings have a root, I move them to a pot and keep them at F 55 for a few weeks until I have leaves. Plants will bloom in three months from germination and should be grown in full sun in well draining but moisture retentive soils, in a shady location the foliage can develop black spots and fall off the plant, but I must say that these seed raised plants look a lot better than the named cultivated clones on the market. Plants have stayed attractive all season long, looking good even in the fall with large attractive green leaves that often turn a bright reddish color.

[Sommersonne]

Plants grow 2.5 to 4 feet tall with semi-double bright golden-yellow colored sunflower-like flowers, long-lived showy perennials, blooming for many weeks in mid to late summer. Good cut flowers, lasting a longtime in a vase. Plants grow best in sunny location but will grow and flower in some shade, too much shade and the plants will need staking. Tolerant of dry soils, but likes typical good loamy garden soil best. Will bloom the first year from an early sowing, even with a late spring early summer sowing plants will flower the later in the year. Long lived and clump forming, the clumps can be divvied every few years in spring or late summer. Pests include aphids and leaf minors, both of which cause generally only cosmetic damage if their numbers are high.

Zones 4-9. Germination in one to three weeks at 75ºF. Lightly cover seeds with soil medium.

  Heliotropium arborescens 'Mini Marine'
Code: HAMM-A8
Price: $1.85

Quantity in Basket: none

'Heliotrope'

This tender perennial grows fast and makes a choice mass planting or houseplant or pot plant for the patio. This selection grows 8 to 10 inches tall and has deep dark purple flowers that are very fragrant. I like the wrinkled looking leaves too, which are a dark greenish purple color. The stems become woody and if you are keeping the plants for more than one year, they should be cut back. Best in full sun in soils that are moist but not wet. Trim back the stems to form a more full top and shorter, more stocky plants. Cuttings can be rooted and grown inside over winter.

Surface sow seeds, light needed for best germination, use F 75, germination in 2 to 3 weeks. Hardy in Zone 10, other wise take inside for winter or grow as an annual. The species is native from Peru. Germination in less than 2 weeks at 68-75ºF, rapid germination, but some seeds might be erratic and spread out over a few weeks, grow seedlings out cooler, say around 55F, to keep plants from becoming leggy inside.

'Hawkweed' or 'Fox and Cubs' or 'Orange Hawkweed' (Might be found now under Pilosella )

Plants have short very hairy leaves with flowering stems 12 inches tall. Attractive, bright-almost glowing orange-red colored flowers shaped like small daisies, the flowers have reddish out sides and bright orange centers. Plants are for the rock garden and mass plantings. Keep in mind this is a weedy one that spreads both by seeds and runners. Does well in dry soils and in grass were mowing will not keep it in check. Flowers for a long period in early to mid summer. Use in poor soils in full sun. This is one of those plants that is best planted in one of those locations were every thing else you have tried has not performed well. I like the plant and the flowers, but one needs to keep an eye on it, thankfully it is not one of those over powering growers that smother every thing in it's path but only takes whatever bare ground it can find. Rabbits and Grouse like to feed on the leaves and seeds.

Long blooming period in mid summer. Plants will bloom the second year. One of the neatest and best behaved of the hawkweeds with no runners and remaining attractive all season long. I have never had problems with self sowing, which cannot be said about some of the others in the Hawkweed group of plants. Grow in poor soils, that are free draining and alkaline in pH, does well in sandy and rocky soils. Like most plants with very hairy (downy) foliage and stems, plants do not like extremely wet or humid climates or wet rainy winters. 'Arkwright's Campion' (ark-RIGHT-ee-eye)

Here is a plant with a flower color you either love or hate, the color is a very bright masculine vermilion with dark shaded foliage. Plants grow 8-15 inches tall. The flowers are large and look like a giant version of one of it parents L. chalcedonica except that the flowers are not located in a large rounded heads, but are clustered in small groups along the leaf axis next to the stems. The foliage is a dark bronzy-maroon to purplish in spring, becoming bronze-green in summer. The plants have purple tinted stems that contrast attractively with the vivid flower color. Plants bloom in late June and July. Use in full sun in the North and some shade in the South. They like a well draining, moisture retentive soil.

Zones 3-8. In zones three and four they should be mulched over the winter, because the roots are not fully hardy and can die during very cold weather, which does not kill the plant-they just form very thick multi-stemmed plants that then need to be divided in early spring, otherwise they produce small over crowded clumps with few flowers on stems only 6 inches tall. They work well in the same locations as L. x haageana. If you love bright red flowers, this is one to try: if red is too strong for you, then stay away from this one.

Plants tend to go dormant in late summer and will return next spring. they are noticeable from a good distance and are hardy in Zones 3-8.(The roots are not so hardy in the north (Zones 3-4) - so plants grow in to thick short clumps after 2 or 3 years and should be divided if you want taller plants)
