'Salt-Bush' or 'Groundsel-Tree' (BACK-uh-riss: hal-lim-if-FOLE-ee-uh) or 'Sea Myrtle' or 'Salt Bush' or 'Buckbrush' or 'Cottonseed Tree' ASTERACEAE.

White flower heads on plants that grow 4 to 6 feet tall. A salt tolerant species. Freedom from disease, and attractive fall foliage make an attractive ornamental, in some locations plants can be come weedy, they are useful plants as soil or beach stabilizers because of their good root system and reseeding. Full sun in moist soils.

Zones (4)5-10. Surface sow seeds and use 50-60F, provide plenty of light during germination, which takes place in 1 to 3 weeks. If no results move to 30-39F for 6 weeks, then back to 55F. Native from the eastern and southern coastal states of the USA. Can not be shipped to Australia, were it is becoming a pest species.

'Arrowleaf Balsamroot'

Large golden-yellow colored sunflower like flowers. Plants are slow to grow the first two years with a tendancy to go summer dormant if not happy. The flowering stems grow 12 to 25 inches tall. The first year of growth they develop a large tap root.

Sow and keep moist and warm (60-75F) for three weeks then move for 5 weeks to 33-39ºF, move to 68ºF for germination. Or sow the seeds in the fall and over winter outside.

Plants produce multi-stemmed clumps that grow up to five feet tall with lupine-like spikes of a medium, yet a rich shade of blue. After flowering the uniform clumps have a vase shape of rich green foliage all season long. 'Blue False Indigo' or 'Lesser false Indigo' or 'Dwarf Blue Indigo' (ap-TIS-ee-a: ow-STRAW-lis)

lilac-blue flowers on 30 inch tall plants. Attractive flowers in late spring and nice seed pods in mid to late summer. This form is more showy that the normal species, with its smaller leaves and shorter stature which is dominated by a greater amount of flowers. Very much like a showy lupine but much easier to grow and long lived in the garden, drought tolerant too. a nice cut flower with a long vase life. If you like the the normal species you will love this subspecies. Plants have deep tap roots and should be planted out were you want them to stay. The genus name comes from the Greek word 'bapto' and means 'To dip' because the plants were used to make a dye, the species name means 'southern.'

A Native of Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Texas. Soak seeds in hot water for 2 days, changing the water every 12 hours. Lightly cover seeds and use F50. Use clean medium and do not over water or allow to dry out while germination is taking place. 1-4 weeks.

[Baptisia alba var. macrophylla]'White Wild Indigo'

Plants produce tall spikes of creamy-white colored flowers from 2 to 5 feet tall. Plants grow into dense clumps of sea green colored, with pea-bush like foliage. Forms an attractive accent plant in the garden, grows best in full sun in well draining soils. A hardy perennial that is drought tolerant with deep taproots; plants do not transplant well when mature so plant out into a permanent location when young. White Indigo grows best in rich well-drained soil, but can tolerate some short-term moist conditions. After flower the plants produce fruits that are long spikes of large black pods that are useful for dried flower arrangements.

Plants with blue-green foliage, form small rounded bushes that bloom in mid to late spring. The flowers are spike that droop down below the top of the foliage. The flowers are creamy yellow color and after blooming is done, large charcoal black seedpods are produced in late summer. The seedpods or fruits can be used in flower arrangements. Grow in full sun in well draining soils; plants form a deep taproot once established are drought and heat tolerant. Nice backdrop in the perennial garden along a fence or used as specimens. Will take a few years of growth before the plants are large enough to bloom, once established they should not be moved.

'Large Yellow Wild Indigo'

This is a very showy spring blooming species with solid yellow colored flowers. the flowers are produced along the length of the 2 to 3 foot tall stems.


Soak seed in warm water for 2 days -change the water every 12 hours, Germination starts in less than two weeks at 68ºF and can be spread out over a few weeks. Baptisia seedlings are some what resentful of broken roots, so plant out when the new plants are young, or start them in pots (If left in the pots to long, the large main taproot will grow out the bottom of the pots).

'Yellow Wild Indigo' or 'Horsefly Weed' Fabaceae:

This species blooms from early to late summer. The yellow flowers are shaped like pea-flowers and the plants produce blooming stems 3 to 4 feet tall. The bush-like plants have three parted leaflets like clover. This species is best grown in full sun or part shade in deep, rich soils that are well-drained, with a neutral to slightly acid Ph. They have a deep root system and resent root disturbance, and are best left alone once they are established. Seedlings are slow to establish so transplanting should be done with care, with plants taking a few years of growth before they are large enough to flower, provide the young plants plenty of sunlight and a well draining soil. They, along with other Baptisia have a symbiotic relationship with soil fungi and bacteria. The plants form nodules on the roots where the bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen.

Native to eastern United States. Soak seed in warm water for 2 days -change the water every 12 hours. Germination starts in less than two weeks at 68ºF and some seeds can germinate over the next few weeks. The seeds develop a very hard seed coat as they dry – and dry seeds can sometimes take few years to germinate if left in the soil, on established plants some self sowing can occur. Soak seeds in water for 12 to 24 hours, changing the water every 12 hours before sowing.

Many colors in this mix. A fine semi-shrub that is loved by butterflies. Plants will bloom the first year with an early sowing. The flowers are somewhat like lilacs in shape and display. Plants grow 72-100 inches (100 in = 2.54 m) tall but will freeze off in the northern part of the country; and regrow new stems again in the spring. Plants are small shrubs in the south. Fast growing with silver white leaves and stems.

Zones (4)5-9, zone 4 with good winter cover - but will not survive every year.

Fine seed, do not cover, use F 70-80 F (80 °F = 26.7 °C), germination in 1-2 weeks. The germination is spread out over a few weeks. Sealing up in a Plastic bag helps very much. The seed is very small and when sowing be careful so that wind currents do not blow them away. ( Keep bag out of direct sun light).
