'Yugoslav Hibiscus' or 'Cedar Cup' Malvacaea:

Plants grow to a height of 6 to 8 feet (8 ft = 2.44 m) tall and are upright growing with good sized white to light pink flowers that remind one of hollyhocks. The petals are fringed and the centers of the flowers are made up of yellow stamens surrounding the style and showing between the five petals are the green sepals. The flowers are born from the leaf axis and are singly produced or sometimes in two's or three's. The leaves are large and palmate in shape with three to five sharp pointed lobes and have coarse toothed edges (They remind me some what of Grape leaves). Blooming in July and August. Best in deep soils that are moist but well drained and poor in nitrogen. Part sun to full sun (in shallow soils into much sun plants will wilt). This species is native from Yugoslavia. In some locations may be short lived (were soil is too rich) but mostly perennials were they will self seed if soil conditions are suitable for the small plants. Grows into large clumps with a deep large rootstock and is best for large gardens and parks or used as a dramatic large specimen.

Zones (3) 5-8

Sow and keep for 6 months at 39ºF (39 °F = 3.9 °C) (refrigerator) or winter out side, move to 65-75 ºF (75 °F = 23.9 °C) for germination. Will bloom the first year from an early sowing. Pricking the seeds with a sharp pin will cause germination in two to three weeks allowing one to forgo the cold period. Another way to start the seeds, is to place seal them up in a plastic baggy with some moist paper towel and keep in the fridge, check the seeds every week or so and sow those that germinate in the fridge. Germination starts in about 2 months and can be spread-out over 6 more months.

Plants have tall stems over 4 feet tall with many pinkish-purple flowers along the top 1/3 of the stems and interesting cut 'leaves.' An attractive plant best used in a dense thickly planted garden or wild area, as they self seed readily, its easily enough to remove young plants and they start blooming very early. Here in Minnesota they are best grown as annuals that start blooming in June/July and bloom until frost. Allow a few seedlings to grow next year. Perennials in warmer areas. This in one of those plants that will move around the garden from year to year. Works well with most other tall plants.

'Rough Gay-feather' or 'Blazing Star' or 'Dotted Blazing Star'

< There are 40 or so species in Liatris and I find them all to be interesting and loved by butterflies. This species likes dry open sandy soils and grows over a wide range from Minnesota to Texas. Use in full sun in the perennial boarder or the grass garden, plants grow up to three feet tall and have purple flowers clustered together into 'buttons.' A number of stems come from each plant and bloom for many weeks in late summer. Plants will bloom the second or third year after germination and bloom in late summer. Much loved by Butterflies. I love this plant but it is a little bit on the floppy side-so stake or better yet, grow it mixed in with short grasses and other plants that will support it. I just let mine lean over and do their own thing.

Zones 3-8. Surface sow seeds, light helps with germination, use F 70, germination is spread out over a few months. Grow the seeds in the seed tray for one year and then transplant out in the spring of the next year. Will take two or three years to reach flowering size. The corm like root-stock should be planted around 1 inch deep or less. Be carful during fall clean up that you do not remove the corms from the soil when cleaning up the dried stems.

{Orange Queen} 'Golden Groundsel' (lig-ew-LAH-ree-a: den-TAH-ta)

Clump forming perennials with dark green, large round leaves with purple maroon colored undersides. In mid summer plants have daisy like yellow-gold flowers on thick spikes that rise just above the foliage, with leafy bracts. This species likes a moist, semi shady site, but takes more sun with more moisture in the soil. In hot direct sun-they will wilt, nothing worse looking than a plant with large showy leaves laying on the ground, they pick them selves up again in the evening. Grows 3-3.5 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Blooms in July-Aug. Large showy plants, mix with Astilbe and those grasses and sedges that like some afternoon shade.

The species name means 'toothed' and they are native from China and Japan, hardy in zones 4-8. lower if in a cool spot. This seed should give you a few different color selections to choose from, keep the best and divide them as they become large, great looking plants when used in a mass planting along a pond edge. When grown well- they become very large, bold specimens that command attention when you have visitors in the garden. Takes about 5 weeks at 55- 60ºF, germination is erratic to 6 months or more so keep seed tray moist for one year. The seeds are large and plants grow fast. They have large roots that go deep into the ground and as they age become more tolerant of less than ideal conditions but its best to keep them out of the hot afternoon sun but give them plenty of light in the morning or bright dappled shade.
