[Dalea purpurea] 'Purple Prairie Clover'

Plants will grow from 2.5 to 3.5 feet tall with long heads of flowers that bloom with a column up the heads over a number of weeks in summer. An upright perennial that is native to north central United States. The uniquely shaped inflorescences of lavender-purple flowers are concentrated together into slender cone-like clusters that end the wiry stems. The flowers begin to open from the bottom of the cone, and the flowers bloom progressively and slowly up to the tops in narrow bands. The plants can be in flowers as early as May and as late as late September. This species grows well on slopes, and is useful for mass plantings, roadside plants, and meadow prairie restorations. It is an excellent, high protein, forage for livestock and is showy enough for general gardens and wildflower, native gardens. Very drought tolerant once established and long lived, plants have extensive root system, which along with the tap-root, makes transplanting difficult. Seed germination starts in 14 to 30 days when sown at 65 to 70F. Sowing depth 1/16inch. 293,000 seeds per pound and a seeding rate of 8 lbs. per acre is recommended for forage. Prefers sandy or well-drained soils in full sun but will take some shade.

Zones 3-9

Native from central USA from Canada to Mexico and west of the Appalachian mountains to the Rockies. Soak seeds in hot water for 24 hours, change the water with fresh hot water every 8 hours. Sow and cover very lightly and use 70 to 85F. Germination is spread out over a few weeks.

'Butterbur' or 'Bog Rhubarb' or 'Butterfly Dock'

Large rounded leaves. Plants have flowers produced in club shaped spikes in early spring, before the leaves emerge from the ground. Flower color is rosy-purple. Grow in deep, humus rich, moist soils -- not for wet water logged soils but they like constant soil moisture. Large leaves are attractive as an accent plant next to water and can grow to 3 feet across. Leaves are large and broad but plants only reach a height of 12 to 24 inches. Once established-they need some room-they can become invasive were really happy(moist soils)and their roots are disturbed, plants form slowly spreading clumps. But a large display of plants is impressive. Use in full sun to half day shade. In full sun under dry conditions plants can look ratty by the end of summer- so provide some moisture.

Zones 4-8. Surface sow seeds and use F 55, keep seed medium moist at all times, best if sown and sealed up in a plastic bag. Germination is spread out over many weeks.

Trumpet shaped flowers are a tan-yellow color. Yellow flowers in the shape of a long tube with a flaring mouth, The flowers combined with the foliage on this plant will generate questions of interest and you can tell your neighbors it's a Jacob's Ladder, and they will say ' I did not know there were yellow Jacob's ladders'. Plants grow 15' tall with clusters of flowers at the top of the stems. This species is another one that does not like wet soils so keep it in moist but well drained soils, this is best done by mixing in sand or small rocks around it. 'Great Solomon's Seal' kahm-you-TAH-tum

Native to North America from New Hampshire to Manitoba to Mexico. 6-7 feet tall stems with leaves 5-7 inches long. Large thick stems with 3-8 flowers clustered at the leaf axis on long peduncles (stems). The flowers are 3/4 inches long and greenish in color. A great plant with tall arching stems for shade and part shade, clumps with 5- 10 stems or plants solitary. The plant that I have grows to six+ feet tall. It has nice strong stems that come straight up from the ground to about three feet then begin a gentle arch. In the wild these plants are isolated single stems in habit but in cultivation grow into nice clumps. Slow growing and will take some afternoon sun. Does well in moist soils. Now lumped under P. bilorum, but to me, seems incorrect. A tall, large plant that will have from 6 to 8 foot long stems.

Zones 3-8. Seeds need a prolonged cold period before germination -- some times two cold periods are needed so do not discard seeds for three years.

The flowers are blue-violet and packed into a dense spike 6 inches long on top of 12 to 18 inch long stems. The flower buds are bright red and turn to a redish-pink color just before opening. Flowering from the bottom up. The rosette forming clumps grow 12 inches wide. Best grow in humus rich, moister retentive, soils in part shade; will take full sun if the soils are moist. Prefers slightly acid to neutral soils-use peat moss when planting out. Very attractive and popular species but requires some attention to its growing requirements. Plants bloom in June and July. They do not do well in areas with hot dry summers but should have dry conditions in winter, best covered with some evergreen branches. Plants start growth late in spring. In many areas best treated as a biennial to be divided after blooming.

Zones 5-8. Native from wet mountains in China and cool meadows.

Surface sow seeds and use F 75, germination is spread out over a few weeks. Might be helpful to seal up in a plastic bag. After germination grow on cool for a few weeks (F 65) Keep moist at all times during germination.
