Clump forming plants with large clusters of rich violet colored flowers grouped together in tight clusters at the ends of 20 to 28 inch tall stems. Nice cut flowers. (kar-dee-0-KEE-num: gi-GAN-tee-um) LILIACEAE.

Plants grow 8-10 feet tall with stout, leafy stems that have up to 20-30 flowers. These bulb forming plants have large, dark green leafs that are heart shaped instead of long and narrow like true lilies, which they are related to. They flower in summer with 6-12 inch long, Easter-lily like flowers, that are scented and a creamy-white color. Like most moth pollinated plants the scent is the strongest at night. The trumpet shaped blossoms have red-purple stripes inside. The seeds might take 4+ years to flower. A winner to impress your gardening and non-gardening friends- but an investment in time is needed. Grow in open shade, were not exposed to hot sun, soil should be well drained. This species is monocarpic - which means that the plant dies after it flowers- but don't fear- before the plants die they will produced a number of smaller bulb off-sets that will flower in the future, so once established clumps are long lived. The genus name means something like 'Heart Lily' in relation to the large heart-shaped leaves. The species name means 'Very Large'

'Wild Senna' Plants grow four feet tall and have a shrubby appearance with elongated clusters of bright yellow flowers. Drought tolerant. This species is a native member of the pea family found from Eastern and North Central North America. The compound foliage gives the Cassia genus a feathery appearance from a distance. This member of the pea family fixes nitrogen from the air improving soil fertility for those plants that grow around it. In July and August the plants send up racemes of bright yellow flowers that look some what like small pea flowers. The compound foliage turns golden-yellow in the fall. Plants grow best in moister retentive, sandy loam soils, but are drought tolerant once established. They form deep taproots and are best left in place once established. Mixes nicly with Baptisia and Thermopsis. Full sun or light shade. Takes two or three years to bloom from seed.

Zones 3-10. Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours, lightly cover seeds, germination is spread out over a few weeks and some my take up to a year.

  Catananche caerulea 'Amour Blue'
Code: CA98-A8
Price: $2.45

Quantity in Basket: none

'Cupid's Dart' (kat-a-NAN-ka: se-RU-lee-a) ASTERACEAE.

This selection will bloom the first year from an early sowing and has meduim-dark blue flowers with darker blue centers. A most useful cut flower for the table or for drying with tall wiry stems that are held up above low growing silver-cast woolly foliage. The foliage is long up to 10 inches and thin maybe 1/2 to 3/4 inch wide with a few large teeth and forms a mat over the ground. So they are best grown by them selves in a cluster of five or more plants, which will prevent the foliage from being swallowed up under larger plants and put on a good floral display in the garden. The stems are 2 feet tall and plants put on a prolific display and respond well to deadheading. Plants do well in poor, well draining soils in full sun, were they will be free flowering during July into fall. Short lived over the winter in wet or heavy soils, doing best in well drained - dry chalky soils. The genus name means something to the effect 'love Potion' and they were used in magical potions by ancient Greeks to nab the one that got away. In flower arrangements it is still use to symbolize love. Zones 3-9. The species is native from south western Europe including Italy. As an interesting note-this plant, like many others, illustrates the fact that you cannot determine the winter hardiness of a plant by the geographic location that it comes from.

Zones 4-9. Lightly cover seeds and use F70, germination 7-20 days with flowering in 15 weeks from sowing.

'Mouse-Ear-Coreopsis' or 'Mouse-Ear-Tickseed' or 'Maysville Daisy (ko-REE-op-sis: ow-rik-ew-LAH-ta) Asteraceae:

This is a low growing selection of the species with a blooming height of 5-10 inches (-10 in = -25.4 cm). The plants have cup shaped, bright golden-yellow orange flowers produced from late spring through summer and sometimes even into fall. The thick, bushy plants have spreading stolons that spread out on top of, or just under the ground - like strawberries, but not as long, spreading maybe 3 to 5 inches (5 in = 12.7 cm) a year. Planted in small groups of 5 plants, they make very showy additions to the rock garden or the front of the border. Useful also as an edging planting or in large pots. The flowers are 1 to 1.5 inches (1.5 in = 3.81 cm) across and have finely toothed or notched ray flowers. Best grown in well drained, medium rich soils, in full sun; they do well even in sandy soil. Since plants are smaller than other Coreopsis, they are not as drought tolerant, and if very dry will wilt, so provide some moisture during dry periods. Be careful that you do not over crowd them with taller plants. This is a perennial species and division can be done in spring or after they finish flowering in summer. The genus name is Greek and means 'looks like a bug' – and some species of coreopsis have seeds that look somewhat like wood ticks, thought this is not really one of them.

Zones 4-9

This species is native to South Eastern USA. Surface sow seeds, light needed for best germination. Use 65F (65 °F = 18.3 °C), germination takes from 5-45 days.
