Good cut flowers, lasting a longtime in a vase. Plants grow best in sunny location but will grow and flower in some shade, too much shade and the plants will need staking. Tolerant of dry soils, but likes typical good loamy garden soil best. Will bloom the first year from an early sowing, even with a late spring early summer sowing plants will flower the later in the year. 'Heliotrope'

This tender perennial grows fast and makes a choice mass planting or houseplant or pot plant for the patio. This selection grows 8 to 10 inches tall and has deep dark purple flowers that are very fragrant. I like the wrinkled looking leaves too, which are a dark greenish purple color. The stems become woody and if you are keeping the plants for more than one year, they should be cut back. Best in full sun in soils that are moist but not wet. Trim back the stems to form a more full top and shorter, more stocky plants. Cuttings can be rooted and grown inside over winter.

Surface sow seeds, light needed for best germination, use F 75, germination in 2 to 3 weeks. Hardy in Zone 10, other wise take inside for winter or grow as an annual. The species is native from Peru. Germination in less than 2 weeks at 68-75ºF, rapid germination, but some seeds might be erratic and spread out over a few weeks, grow seedlings out cooler, say around 55F, to keep plants from becoming leggy inside.

This seed produces a mix of plants with colorful leaves and/or showy flowers. Flower colors range from white to red with flowering stem reaching from 8 to 20 inches tall. The foliage colors range from solid green to bronze-red to silver striped and marbled to red. Stems are colorful too. Some of the leaves have very thick substance, and to me smell like green bananas. A very nice way to grow a range of different ‘Coral bells’, and some of the plants could even be worth naming. The color of the foliage develops as plants become larger, the first year some plants will not show color but the second year will show off their true nature. Use these plants in a sunny location that has some afternoon shade, in the south more shade is beneficial. Recommended.

Zones 4-9. Surface sow, seed is very small, keep medium moist at all times but not wet. Use glass or plastic to cover trays or pots. Germination at F 65, in 1-6 weeks. Germination is spread-out over many weeks -- Sow thinly so the older plants will not smoother out the later germinating seeds. Seedlings are slow to take off for the first few weeks; they start off as small flat clusters of leaves no larger than a pin-head. Once they are the size of a nickel they are fast growing. Some nice sized plants are produced in only four months. Keep the soil medium moist and once seedlings start to grow keep well feed with a weak fertilizer solution. I move them to pots once they are a few inches tall or they can be planted into the landscape.

(hew-KER-a a-mer-i-CANE-a)

A nice seed strain with cream colored flowers on 24 inch tall stems above decorative silver marbled foliage, the leaves are a nice medium green color with a good amount of evenly distributed silver to purplish streaking. The leaves are round-heart shaped and are held up off the ground-seed produces a number of different forms but almost all have marbling and you will have a group of nice sized plants the first year. The resulting plants are quite uniform -making a nice ground cover in light shade. The foliage persists over the winter and takes on a nice reddish color. Seedling are small at first-so take care when watering the first few weeks, I start mine in a plastic bag under lights and have had very good success.

Zones (4)5-8

Surface sow, seed is very small, keep medium moist at all times but not wet. Use glass or plastic to cover trays or pots. Germination at F 65 in 1-6 weeks. For best results: http://hardyplants.com/seed_starting_.html High soil temps can delay seed germination.

Here is a tall, showy native wildflower with large, 6 inch wide flowers. The flowers are a rosy-pink color with wine-red colored centers. The large heart-shaped leaves are attractive too. Plants bloom in late summer and a few plants will have white flowers with wine-red centers. They grow best in moist, humus-rich soil in full sun to light shade, reaching a height from 3 to 6 feet. Useful along banks of streams and moist areas or used in the perennial garden as a center point in for a late season display. If the plants are cut back in late spring they will produce shorter plants with larger flowers. Hibiscus moscheutos (hi-BIS-kus: mos-KO-tos) - 'Rose Mallow'

Here is a showy perennial with flowers that grow up 10 inches in diameter. Plants need sun but will do well in light shade, the soil should be rich and have abundant organic matter. For best results give abundant moisture, growing well even in damp or boggy soil, doing well along the edge of a pond or stream. Stems are very sturdy and will hold up in a windy site. They grow as large as a multi-stemmed shrub and should be given a lot of space. Most effective used as an accent or specimen plant, or in place of a shrub; but keep in mind that they are very late to come out of the ground in the spring - in the north they might wait till the end of June to come out of the ground. This selection can be used as a dense hedge when massed, but dies down to the ground in winter. They will benefit from a winter mulch of pine boughs or salt marsh hay, especially in areas that cycle through many warm and cold spells over the winter. Flowers wilt within 1 hour of being cut-so they do not make good cut flowers. Control Japanese Beetles and white flies, which can damage the large flowers.
Hibiscus plants are late to break dormancy in the spring. So take care when planting or working in the garden around them early in the season. Cut back the woody old stems to the ground in late winter. This selection produces large flowers in different shades of red, rose, pink and white. Plants grow 60 inches tall and bloom mid to late summer. Can be grown as an annual, with good flowering the first year from an early sowing.

'Hawkweed' or 'Fox and Cubs' or 'Orange Hawkweed' (Might be found now under the genus Pilosella )

Plants have short very hairy leaves with flowering stems 12 inches tall. Attractive, bright-almost glowing orange-red colored flowers shaped like small daisies, the flowers have reddish out sides and bright orange centers. Plants are for the rock garden and mass plantings. Keep in mind this is a weedy one that spreads both by seeds and runners. Does well in dry soils and in grass were mowing will not keep it in check. Flowers for a long period in early to mid summer. Use in poor soils in full sun. This is one of those plants that is best planted in one of those locations were every thing else you have tried has not performed well. I like the plant and the flowers, but one needs to keep an eye on it, thankfully it is not one of those over powering growers that smother every thing in it's path but only takes whatever bare ground it can find. Rabbits and Grouse like to feed on the leaves and seeds.

'Shaggy Hawkweed' or 'Woolly Hawkweed (hee-e-RAH-kee-um: vi-LO-sum)

The species name means 'softly Hairy.' Very bright yellow flowers over very hairy silver-white colored leaves and stems, a fun addition to the front of the border. Plants grow 9 inches tall. Long blooming period in mid summer. Plants will bloom the second year. One of the neatest and best behaved of the hawkweeds with no runners and remaining attractive all season long. I have never had problems with self sowing, which cannot be said about some of the others in the Hawkweed group of plants. Grow in poor soils, that are free draining and alkaline in pH, does well in sandy and rocky soils. Like most plants with very hairy (downy) foliage and stems, plants do not like extremely wet or humid climates or wet rainy winters. Puts on a showy display were in bright sunlight the flowers are so bright that they almost blind you.

Zones 4-8. This species is native to central and southern Europe.
