lingonberry, Partridgeberry, Cowberry, Foxberry, Quailberry, Mountain Cranberry, Red Whortleberry, Lowbush Cranberry, Mountain Bilberry, Ericaceae:

This species is a low-growing, typically less than 12 inches (12 in = 30.5 cm) tall, woody subshrub. Plants have evergreen foliage and a groundcover like habit. It is closely related to Gaultheria procumbens partridgeberry. The flowers bloom in late spring and early summer and berries ripen in August. The red fruits are tart and smaller than cranberries. They are adapted for acid soils with a pH of 3.5 to 5.3. They have fine roots that spread through the top of the soil, and they spread by way of runners which develop buds and new shoots. These small plants are slow to establish and should be hand-weeding, mulched over the winter and frequently watering for the first two years. The plants and fruits are beautiful, making nice ornamentals under acidic conditions. More fruit is produced in full sun, but plants grow in dappled shade also. They do not like warm conditions with high humidity and thus are best in areas with cool summers. Plants are intolerant of dry conditions or droughts that dry out the top soil layer.

sow outdoors, best with 2-4 weeks at 68ºF, 4-6 mths at 21ºF, move to 53ºF for germination.

Cover with a mesh screen to keep rodents from eating the seeds, germination should occur the second spring. The sand bed works very well for seeds that take a long time to germinate, such as woodland wild flowers, peonies, Iris. The bed is best made in an area that can watered once in a while when it is dry and should be in bright open shade or receive up to half day sun. Remove seedlings when large enough to transplant.

'Corsican violet' VIOLACEAE:

A choice small species with decumbent stems (means that the stems come out from the plant and lay down and the ends of the stems grow upward)with many blue flowers. Blooms well the first year and puts on a very showy display the second year, starting in late spring and blooming throughout the summer. I like to mix them in pots and baskets were their long stems tumble over the edges and the large open-faced flowers face outwards - a good choice. Full sun to half-day shade. Blooms all summer into fall. Flowers include all blue, some with light markings and others with white 'lips' with lighter face markings. Flowers are held up 5 to 7 inches off the ground during flowering and plants grow to be 8 to 10 inches wide. Best in full sun or some light shade, we have a few plants that have been growing in shade most of the day and they struggle and become long and leggy but have lived for three years that way and have bloomed a little. But in fullsun the numberof flowers produced cover the plants in solid clouds of blue.

Zones 4-8. Native from grassy areas in Corsica.

This clump-forming plant grows 5 to 8inches tall and about 6 inches wide. Plants have deep violet-blue colored flowers which are born on leafless stalks from the center of the clumps. Blooms from early spring into early-mid summer. Leaves are divided into bird-foot-like segments with very narrow leaflets. The Divided leaves look like wild delphinium foliage - thus the common name of 'Larkspur Violet'. This species is similar in appearance to the 'Bird Foot Violet'( Viola pedata) but with smaller flowers that are more pea-like in shape while the Bird-Foot Violet has more open shaped flowers. Both species like open, lose ground that drains quickly in sun to part shade.

Zones 3-8. Native from Saskatchewan to Ohio south to Oklahoma and Arkansas. Cover seeds, darkness needed for germination which Starts in 2 or 3 weeks at F 65. Germination can be spread out over many weeks. If no germination in 5 weeks put in the fridge (32-39F) for 7 to 12 weeks then move to 65F, like many Violas seed germination often occurs as the soil temps are rising just above freezing in the spring. Sows seeds in the fall in a wide pot or tray and keep in a sheltered location ( I cover the trays with oak leaves) and cover with a thin layer of winter mulch and leave out side over winter. Remove winter covering in early spring.
