This upright, unbranched perennial grows 3 to 5 feet tall and has flower heads that are cone shaped but lack petals, the dark heads have a collar of green sepals. The basel leaves are large with pointed ends, and the stem leaves are reduced in size. Rudbeckia occidentalis likes moisture retentive but good draining soils in full sun. An excellent food source for birds.
