    Hummingbird Plant (skew-teh-LARE-ee:lon-jee-FOH-lee-uh) Lamiaceae:

    Showy clusters of bright red flowers, the flowers have long tubes and are loved by hummingbirds. Scutellaria longifolia grows only 6 to 12 inches tall, blooms all summer, and over a few years will grow into a clump a few feet wide. The ends of the stems produce short spikes of bright fuchsia-red, tubular flowers on new growth. Grow in full sun to part shade, under hot conditions some afternoon shade may be beneficial. Tolerates most soil types as long as they are moist but well-drained. Not drought tolerant so provide supplemental water during dry periods.

    Native to the mountains of Mexico and Central America.

    Surface sow the small seeds of Scutellaria longifolia and keep the soil medium moist but not wet and use 65F, if no germination in four weeks, move to the fridge (30-39F) for 5 to 9 weeks, then move back to 65F for germination.
