'Downy Yellow Violet'
This woodland violet has stems that have both leaves and flowers, the stems grow 6 to 10 inches tall with small bright yellow flowers, blooming in mid spring to early summer. In mid to late summer plants go dormant. The flowers have purple-brown whiskers. Each plant only has a few stems and leaves with an upright habit, best used naturalized in a woodland garden were they can self seed by way of their cleistogamous flowers ( They look like green pods the size of a pea seed). A dry soil species that will take moist spring soils. .
Zones 3-8. Native to woodlands and moist banks in sun in Eastern North America. Cover seeds, darkness needed for germination, 2-13 weeks at F 45. If no germination in 4 weeks put in the fridge (30-38F) for 8 weeks. High soil temps will delay germination for a year.
