Aconitum

Plants like cool moisture retentive soils that are well drained. Best with some shade at the bottom of the plants to keep the soil cool and some sun at the top. The species include yellow flowering trailing or scrambling plants to tall upright richly colored blue to purple colored flowering plants. Some forms with white flowers and pinkish tinted white flowers.
Fresh seed germinates easly enough, if sown soon after collection seeds often germinate in 4 weeks at 55-65F, stored seeds develope dormancy that often needs months of cold moist conditions to break. Seeds can be sown any time of the year but warm conditions will delay seed germination often. Keep seed trays for two years and over winter out side if you do not have good results the first time around.

'Common Monkshood' (a-kon-EE-tum na-PEL-us) RANUNCULACEAE.

The easiest of the monkshoods to grow with dark blue to purple colored, helmet shaped flowers. A good substitute for delphiniums in a lightly shaded spot. Plants are variable in flower color from light blue to dark blue and some even have dark blue flowers with darker almost black edging, erect growing with dense racemes of indigo blue flowers, some solid in color others with darker or lighter shadings. Plants flower in mid summer. Three to five feet tall, growing into clumps were happy, ideal for the woodland garden or in the semi shady border. The monkshoods are good for cutting but the sap irritates some people. All Monkshood's are toxic if eaten. Once plants are established, division of clumps is easy in spring. I love the way this plant looks in the spring when coming out of the ground, The leaves look somewhat like it's relative the delphinium.

Native to western and central Europe.

Zones 4-8. Nice upright growing plants with tall 'spikes' of blue helmet shaped flowers. Grows well in light shade or in sun in cool -- moist, but well drained soils. Plants bloom in July. Freeze seed for two weeks before sowing. Sow in a bag with moist seed mix and keep at 70ºF for three wks, then place in the fridge for four weeks, move to F 55 were germination will occur in 1-4 weeks. Light helps with germination.
