Ajuga

Ajuga is a small genus of dwarf plants flowering in spring and early summer. They have blue flowers. They are natives of mountain or lowland pastures and they are easily cultivated in gardens. The species readily increased by division, and they spread to form large mats.
A. genevensis is distinguished from A. reptans by the absence of creeping shoots. The flower stems arc erect from 6 in to 9 inches tall, the flowers are deep blue and arranged in dense whorls along fully half the of the spike-like stem. They are suitable for the front of mixed borders or for the margin of shrubberies and also for naturalizing.

A. reptans flowers in early summer. The flowers are blue and there are white varieties too.
A. alpine flowers well in shady places, blooming on and off all the summer.

	'Geneva Bugle' or 'Blue Bugle' (a-JOO-ga: gen-e-VEN-sis) LAMIACEAEL: Attractive low growing plant for a dry sunny position. Spring blooming with hairy, green, mat forming foliage that produces six inch spikes of bright true blue flowers. I love this easy to grow Ajuga even when it creeps into the grass. In can make an attractive lawn- were it is not bothered by mowing. Many blue flowers form showy drifts in the spring as the leaves are coming out on the trees. (Most plants will have a more true blue color than the picture.) Flowers bloom over many weeks into early summer. The species name means 'From Geneva' Zones 3-8. Native from the mountains of Europe. There are around 40 species of Ajuga and this is the showiest of the commonly grown ones and grows well in dry soils that are not very rich. 	Bugleweed (a-JOO-ga: rep-TANZ} or (ah-JEW-gah REP-tanz) This ground cover has green leaves and blue flowers on 6 inch spikes. Plants like moist but well draining soils but do well also in normal to dry soils too. Plants spread to form thick clumps that are showy in bloom in mid spring and form a nice green carpet the rest of the year, good foliage growth in mid to late summer. The seeds smell like green Tea.
