Anthemis
Anthemis is a genus with around 100 aromatic herbaceous species in the Asteraceae family. The plants have lacy foliage with daisy-like flowers. They are known by the common names of Chamomile, Dog-fennel or Mayweed. They are native from the Mediterranean region and southwest Asia as far east as Iran. A number of species have also become naturalized in other parts of the world. They are drought tolerant plants that flower best in nitrogen poor soil, rich soil produce a lot of floppy foliage and fewer blooms. They are easy to grow from seed, and the seeds are large enough to handle without much difficulty. Germination rates are high and seedling growth is fast, they can be sown on bare ground in spring to late summer with good success as long as the soil does not become very dry during germination and early seedling growth.

(an-THEM-is: san-tee-YO-han-is)

The species name refers to when the plant bloom, in mid-summer, St John's day is June 24th. A nice soft, but luminous orange flowering plant for the sunny garden; growing well in sandy to rocky, well drained soils. This clump forming plant is not as robust growing as 'Kelwayi' but has great ferny foliage with silver highlights. Does not self sow as much as 'Kelwayi' ether. Plants grow 12-24 in tall and 15 to 24 in wide, Forming a thick clump with flowers held above the mound of foliage, long blooming daisy type flowers, summer blooming perennials that are attractive even when not in bloom in early spring with there silver white foliage. Plants often flower the same year sown. Easy, but does not like wet soils, and does very well in sandy or rocky locations but avoid overly rich soils. Plant in full sun to morning shade. Do not give too much Nitrogen, which weakens the plants and makes them short lived.

Zones 4-9. Some flowers the first year if sown early, but most plants will flower heavely the second year. Native from Bulgaria. Surface sow seeds and use 70ºF, germination in 5-18 days.

300 seeds.

'Golden Marguerite' or 'Ox-Eye Chamomile' or 'Dryer's Chamomile' or 'Yellow Chamomile' (an-THEM-is: tink-TO-ree-a)

Bright yellow flowers over fern like foliage on very drought tolerant plants. Nice cut flowers or plant where you want some color for a long time during the hottest parts of the summer. Plants do very well in poor soils and will self seed on bare ground. Not that good in really humid areas. Do not fertilize too much. Otherwise, you will end up with a very large mat of foliage and few flowers. I allow this plant to self-sow around the yard and garden and am always pleased with the results.

Zones 3-9. Native from western Asia. The flowers have been used to make a yellow dye. Will bloom the first year from an early sowing. Surface sow seeds and use 70ºF, germination in 5-18 days.

50 seeds
