These true Asters grow 12 inches tall when in full bloom. The flowers are good sized and come in a mix of colors. This is a formula blend of colors that bloom at the same time and about the same height. The plants make a nice mass bedding effect on a rock wall or in the border, planted in groups of five of more plants each spaced about 10 inches apart. Different blue and pink shades plus white. Will bloom the second year. Grow in full sun in soils that drain well, drought tolerant and long lived once established. Seedlings have a moderate growth rate and can be transplanted out after 5 weeks of growth.

Zones 4-8

Surface sow the seeds, light helps with germination,. Use F 70 germination, with germination starting in 2 weeks and the rest of the germination spread-out over the next 10 weeks.

'Alpine Aster'

This selection grows 10 inches tall and has dark purple-violet flowers. Plants are clump forming and slowly form spreading mats that reach a width of 18 inches. Nice addition to the front of the border or rock garden, I find the Alpine Asters useful for their early flowering. Most of the plants with daisy-like flowers bloom later in the year. Blooms late spring-early summer.

Zones 4-7.

Surface sow seeds and keep moist but not overly wet, use F 70, germination is spread out over a number of weeks.

Nice pink-purple colored flowers with bright yellow centers on 9 inch tall stems. Best effect with these spring blooming plants in groups of five plants with each spaced out about 6 inches apart. Nice in the rock garden or mixed in rocky walls, likes moist but well drained soils. Divide and replant clumps every third year.

'Alpine Aster'

These plants form neat, mounds of 12-18 inch tall open clumps with large flowers. In spring they produce 2 1/2-inch wide flowers in shades of blue, pink, lavender, and white. Late spring/early summer bloomer; Great for the front of the border. Use in full sun in Sandy Loam to Clay Loam soils or even in thin Rocky soils.

(All the North American asters have been move to other genera now, except the alpine aster) Will grow best in dry sunny locations in soils that are alkaline.

Germination is spread out over many weeks at 68ºF. Surface sow seeds, light needed for best results. This is older seed, so Germination starts in about 10 days and is spread-out over a two or three weeks.

[Machaeranthera bigelovii] 'Purple Aster' or 'Plains Aster' or 'Sticky Aster' Grows 2.5 to 3.5 feet tall with lilac colored flowers covering the plant in late summer-fall. The flowers are large and showy, growing up to 1.5 inches wide. This species produces many branches and puts on a very showy display when in bloom. Short lived but were happy will self seed, growing as annuals and biennials under most conditions. For a dry well drained location, likes sandy soils. [Symphyotrichum ericoides] 'White Heath Aster'

White flowers on plants that grow 3 to 4 feet tall. A number of aster cultivars are sold as "Aster ericoides." But are not truly from this species but are from European garden plants and tend to be cultivars of S. dumosum, S. lateriflorum, S. pilosum, or S. racemosum, or hybrids involving one of those species and another species. The misapplication of the name ericoides dates as far back as the nineteenth century and even now some aster cultivars are still being misnamed.

'New England Aster'

Plants grow 36-40 inches (40 in = 1.02 m) tall and bloom in late summer and fall. Will bloom the first year. The 1 inch (1 in = 2.54 cm) wide, brilliant ruby-red flowers with yellow centers are excellent for cutting. Plants are clump forming and have short spreading rhizomes, great for the mid to back of the boarder or in the meadow garden, showy in late summer and fall. Nice cut flower too. Grow in deep well worked soils that are moist and rich (might need some staking or grow in lien soils for less size and more upright habit), use in full sun to part shade.

Zones 4-8

Surface sow seeds in moist seed mix and Chill in the fridge for five days, then move to F 70, plants should start to germinate in 3 weeks.

'Michaelmas Daisy' or 'New York Aster' (AS-ter:NO-vee-bel-GEE-eye)

This is a nice blend of colors including blue, pink and white, reselected for larger and brighter colors. Up to 4 foot tall plants blooming in Aug-Nov but I would trim them back in late June to produce nice thick bush plants that will put on a very showy display. Plants will bloom the first year, late summer blooming species native to much of Eastern USA. The name comes form their bloom period which includes St. Michael's Day (September 29th) Use in full sun or light shade-more shade will lead to floppy growth. Zones (3)4-9. Another very attractive north American species that blooms late summer and fall. Large showy flowers on plants that grow 2 to 3 feet tall. The flowers have small bright yellow centers and soft purplish to pinkish mauve colored rays. This species is tolerant of poor dry soils and around here grows in open woods too. Good cut flowers with scented foliage, good for attracting any late season butterflies too.

'White Aster'

Plants grow 3 feet tall and produces umbels of white flowers in late summer. It likes wet ground. Audubon describes the 'White Aster' as bearing its flowers in flat-topped clusters. The clusters can be a foot wide. Best suited for wild flower gardens were its late summer-fall blooming is very showy but general plant habit is large and some what rangy for the formal garden.
