Astilbe



A number of different species with most of the plants offered being hybrids. Best in moist (not wet) soils. In the north they do best in part shade with more sun than shade and in the south they do best in more shade than sun, they are not full shade plants because they will not flower well with out good light, under poor light conditions they will grow into green clumps but flower poorly. The other condition that effects them is lack of moisture, they should have moist soils, especially before and during blooming. A nice Astilbe planting can be made by digging a hole and lining it with a plastic bag-make a few holes in the bag about half way between the bottom of the hole and the soil line, fill the bag with sandy compost/soil mix. Should only have to water once a week or less. Other wise they are easy to grow, with few pests and not often eaten by any thing. Can be divided every three or four years for best long term performance, dig clumps after blooming and cut into a few pieces and plant a little deeper and water well for a month or two. Heavy feeders that do best in rich soils.

Fresh seed can be stubborn to germinate but aged seed is not difficult.

	'Astilbe' can be used in perennial borders, pond edges and at the edge of woods or under tall open trees. These plants are a little more drought tolerant than the the others, they perform best in lightly shady environments were the soil does not become dry, they do not need wet soil but resent dry conditions. The more sun you give them the more they will flower-but they also will need more moisture in the soil. I would say that at a minimum your Astilbe should receive 3 hours of direct sun and the rest of the day should be open bright shade. A good indicator that your location receives enough light to grow Astilbe is -- would lawn grass grow thick in that location? If there is not enough light to grow thick grass, then its to dark to grow great Astilbe plants. They will live and flower in less light but not grow to be the thick clumps and put on the spectacular flower displays. Make sure plants receive water after they are done blooming into late summer. Many people take good care of their plants until they are done blooming, then neglect them after. Asilbe grow new roots and form the buds in mid to late summer than will be the new growth for next year, if they dry out they will not perform as well the next year. After 5 or so years of good growth plants shoukld be dug and divied, the best time for division is after they are done blooming, but they can be divieded and replanted any time from very early spring into early fall. Zones 4-8 Fine seeds, surface sow, light needed for best germination, 1-4 weeks at F 70 days and F.50 nights. Keep soil moist but not wet. Best if sown into a pot and then place the pot in a plastic bag. Germination can be delayed without the variable night/day temps. Needs some work for best results. 100 seeds.
