'Yellow Wild Indigo' or 'Horsefly Weed' Fabaceae:

This species blooms from early to late summer. The yellow flowers are shaped like pea-flowers and the plants produce blooming stems 3 to 4 feet tall. The bush-like plants have three parted leaflets like clover. This species is best grown in full sun or part shade in deep, rich soils that are well-drained, with a neutral to slightly acid Ph. They have a deep root system and resent root disturbance, and are best left alone once they are established. Seedlings are slow to establish so transplanting should be done with care, with plants taking a few years of growth before they are large enough to flower, provide the young plants plenty of sunlight and a well draining soil. They, along with other Baptisia have a symbiotic relationship with soil fungi and bacteria. The plants form nodules on the roots where the bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen.

Germination starts in less than two weeks at 68ºF and some seeds can germinate over the next few weeks. Soak seeds in water for 12 to 24 hours, changing the water every 12 hours before sowing.
