Plants grow best in moister retentive, sandy loam soils, but are drought tolerant once established. They form deep taproots and are best left in place once established. Code: CA98-A8
Price: $2.45

Quantity in Basket: none

'Cupid's Dart' (kat-a-NAN-ka: se-RU-lee-a) ASTERACEAE.

This selection will bloom the first year from an early sowing and has meduim-dark blue flowers with darker blue centers. A most useful cut flower for the table or for drying with tall wiry stems that are held up above low growing silver-cast woolly foliage. The foliage is long up to 10 inches and thin maybe 1/2 to 3/4 inch wide with a few large teeth and forms a mat over the ground. So they are best grown by them selves in a cluster of five or more plants, which will prevent the foliage from being swallowed up under larger plants and put on a good floral display in the garden. The stems are 2 feet tall and plants put on a prolific display and respond well to deadheading. Plants do well in poor, well draining soils in full sun, were they will be free flowering during July into fall. Short lived over the winter in wet or heavy soils, doing best in well drained - dry chalky soils. The genus name means something to the effect 'love Potion' and they were used in magical potions by ancient Greeks to nab the one that got away. In flower arrangements it is still use to symbolize love. Zones 3-9. The species is native from south western Europe including Italy. As an interesting note-this plant, like many others, illustrates the fact that you cannot determine the winter hardiness of a plant by the geographic location that it comes from.

Zones 4-9. Lightly cover seeds and use F70, germination 7-20 days with flowering in 15 weeks from sowing.

Here is a lower growing selection of Coreopsis pubescens, plants grow 10 to 15 inches tall and bloom most of the summer. Golden colored daisy like flowers with orange-gold centers. Attractive foliage, long blooming, and drought tolerant. Low maintenance perennial, cut off old dry foliage in the fall or spring if desired. Deadheading encourages heaver blooming, but it is easier to shear the plants in half in early summer to promote dense blooming mounds later in the year. Established plants can be divided in spring. Deer resistant and attractive to butterflies. very showy when planted in groups of five or more plants, each spaced about 18 inches apart. Grow in full sun in average garden soils.

Price: $2.55

Quantity in Basket: none

This species is in flower most of the summer, plants produce clear pink flowers that are mixed in amongst soft fern like foliage. The bushy plants grow 10-12 inches tall. Needs moisture retentive soils but a well drained location. Grow in full sun to part shade, intolerant of competition from larger plants. Coreopsis rosea resents dry soils, unlike most of the other Coreopsis species. A Humus-sand mix that is rich and moist will give to the best looking plants, that can grow into good sized spreading clumps up to 2 feet wide, in dry locations plants tend to be much more sparse.

Zones (3)4-8

Surface sow the seeds and keep moist, keep between 40 and 50F, germination is spread out over many weeks. Or sow in the fall and keep outside for germination in early spring.

Atlantic Coreopsis

A tall erect growing plant with branched stems and three palmate leaves. Blooming from mid summer to late fall with 2' wide soft golden yellow that looks like glowing butter. Flowers turning brown or purplish. Forms clumps by rhizomes (stems that spread out under ground.) Plants grow 4 to 8+ feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide but in good soil the plants will spread indefinitely, forming a large, showy clump. Plant in well drained soil in full sun or light shade. Deadhead to promote more flowering. This is a nice tall plant for the prairie garden with great foliage texture-at least in my opinion. A good tall plant that will keep on blooming in late summer into late fall. I like the soft appearance of this plant with the flowers mixed in atop the clumps, which can be very thick if grown well. Easily grown and long lived, grows well even in part shade. Effective used along the edge of the woods. A good choice for poor, dry soils. Plants can self seed on open soils, and it is best to give the plants some space to fill in. Birds like to eat the seeds in the fall.

Zones 4-9

Native to Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

'Sea Kale' or 'Colewort' Brassicaceae:

This domineering plant grows 60 inches tall, with large white flower heads over large blue green leaves. This is not a plant for small areas but given the space that it needs will impress those that visit and look upon its large floral display. The flowering stalk is large and may need a stake to keep it upright (More so in shady locations). the leaves are up to 2 feet long and heart-shaped, they have long petiols, and arre arranged around the base of the plant to from a loose, low mound. the foliage can have a variety of lobing and have coarse toothed edging. The foliage can be damaged by insects but using a systemic insecticide offers good control. A well-grown plant can be over five feet tall and five feet wide. Use this plant in full sun in moist but well draining soils or part shade. The blooms are made up of thousands of small sized, white colored, starry shaped flowers that have a somewhat sweet fragrance and are at their peek bloom in early summer. Use in deep, rich soils that hold moisture all season long but are well draining. Under dry conditions plants become 'tough' looking. One might call this a giant 'Baby's Breath that does not bloom as long but has huge leaves like a rhubarb plant.

Zones (3)5-9.

This is not a hard plant to grow from seed, just give the seeds time to germinate but the seedlings will not flower until they are 2 or 3 years old.

Germination in 3-6 (12) weeks at 60 F. The seeds are large and pea-like with a light whitish tan color, the 'seeds' are light and round in shape and float around on the soil surface on sheets of water during rain storms.

An ornamental foliage plant with dark purple-red colored foliage, the leaves are deeply divided into thirds with segments roughly heart-shaped with slightly ruffled edges. Grows in open shade were it forms a bushy clump about 2 feet tall with atypical umbels of very small pinkish colored flowers produced in late summer and fall. Grow in moisture retentive soils, plants are not very drought tolerant but have done well in our dry beds with more than a half day of shade. Not long lived, the plants we have grow for about three or four years but will self seed some so new plants replace older plants reliably. In Eastern Asia the plants are eaten, they have a slightly bitter taste which some describe as celery-like.

Zones 4-8

The species is native to eastern Asia, were it is found growing in damp places in forests and ditches. Germination is best when sown and keep at 45-55F, germination is spread-out over many weeks. Warm temps will delay germination.
