[Ferocactus tortulispinus] Fire Barrel or Compass Barrel (fer-oh-KAK-tus)

When young this is a rounded cactus with curved spines. Solitary growing with a globose shaped stem, older plants grow up to 2 feet (2 ft = 61 cm) tall and 16 inches (16 in = 40.6 cm) wide. This species has 20 narrow slightly tuberculate ribs and mostly gray spines that are very twisted. When large enough to bloom it produces yellow or orange flowers in summer and early fall.

Plants grow 24 inch (24 in = 61 cm) tall and have stems loaded with fragrant white flowers, likes moist soils and may need staking because of the number of flowers produced. Attractive foliage. Scented flowers.

Lightly cover seed and keep moist, germination in 2-4 weeks at F 60. If no germination in 5 weeks use 6 to 12 weeks between 38 and 50ºF (50 °F = 10 °C), move to 68ºF (68 °F = 20 °C) for germination. Germination is slow and spread out over many months, best kept at 55F (55 °F = 12.8 °C) for as long as possible, keep seeds for a few years, as some seeds will germinate each spring and summer.

Queen Of The Prairie (fil-ih-PEN-dyoo-luh: ROO-bruh) Rosaceae:

Plants flower 6 to 8 feet tall, with large, astilbe-like, clusters of pink to rose-pink flowers. This large plant is best used in large gardens and is spectacular when massed. Good for the borders, cottage garden, and wild/naturalized areas, especially in wet meadows or moist areas along streams or ponds. Best in soils that do not become overly dry, but should have good drainage instead of being swampy. Plants are slowly spreading with running underground stems, unwanted plants are easily enough removed by pulling. .

Smokey Fennel or Bronze Fennel

Dark bronze-brown colored foliage on plants that grow 3 to 5 feet (5 ft = 1.52 m) tall. They have an upright habit with a nice lacy foliage effect. The top ¼ of the plants are filled with dull yellow colored flowers in 3-inch (3 in = 7.62 cm) umbels. Still loved by those yellow and black striped caterpillars of Swallow Tail butterflies. Plants self-seed but any unwanted seedlings are easily pulled up. The foliage is useful as cutting material for flower decorations or as a garnish.

This species of Fritillaria has charming flowers that are larger and more bell-shaped than F. meleagris. The flowers are cream-yellow colored with pale green veining.
