Common Monkshood (a-kon-EE-tum na-PEL-us) RANUNCULACEAE.

The easiest of the monkshoods to grow with dark blue to purple colored, helmet shaped flowers. A good substitute for delphiniums to be grown in a lightly shaded spot. Plants are variable in flower color from light blue to dark blue and some even have dark blue flowers with darker almost black edging, erect growing with dense racemes of indigo blue flowers, some solid in color others with darker or lighter shadings. Plants flower in mid summer. Three to five feet tall, growing into clumps where happy, ideal for the woodland garden or in the semi shady border. The monkshoods are good for cutting but the sap irritates some people. All Monkshood's are toxic if eaten. Once plants are established, division of clumps is easy in spring. I love the way this plant looks in the spring when coming out of the ground, the leaves look somewhat like it's relative the delphinium.

Native to western and central Europe.

Zones 4-8

Nice upright growing plants with tall 'spikes' of blue helmet shaped flowers. Grows well in light shade or in sun in cool - moist, but well drained soils. Plants bloom in July.

Freeze seed for two weeks before sowing. Sow in a bag with moist seed mix and keep at 70ºF for three wks, then place in the fridge for four weeks, move to F 55 were germination will occur in 1-4 weeks. Light helps with germination.

To me the foliage is very attractive in the spring as the plants emerge out of the ground; the leaves are very lacy and cut, shaped somewhat like a hand. Plants like cool moist well-drained soils.

Freeze seed for two weeks before sowing. Sow in a bag with moist seed mix and keep at 70ºF (70 °F = 21.1 °C) for three weeks, then place in the fridge for four weeks, move to F55 where germination will occur in 1-4 weeks. Light helps with germination. Plants will flower the third year.

Lady Bells (a-den-O-fo-ra : bul-ee-YAH-nuh) CAMPANULACEAE:

This is the normal light blue form, plants grow 35 inches tall and almost snake their way up through other plants. A good garden subject for its attractive bell shaped flowers in mid summer. The flowers are charming little bells resembling a Campanula. To me it is one of those plants that are attractive in a dainty sort of way; the flowers are produced later in summer. The foliage is most basil with small-reduced leaves on the stems and a greenish-yellow color. Plant in full sun in moister retentive soil that are well draining or in light shade. Plants bloom in late summer and should bloom the second year. This species produces a thick-fleshy white root and once established does not like to be disturbed.

Zones 3-8. Native to Western China, Eurasia and Japan. Surface sow and germinate the seeds around F45-50, Higher temps will produce poorer results. Germination is irregular, occurring over a period of 1-8 weeks. A good subject to sow in late winter out and keep the tray outside for germination in spring while the soil medium is still cool.

Price: $2.00

[Adenophora stricta] [Adenophora stricta subsp. confusa] 'Ladybells' (ad-eh-NO-for-uh: kon-FEW-suh) Campanulaceae.

Plants grow 3 feet tall with narrow spikes of medium blue flowers, the flowers are bell-shaped and make for nice cut flowers. After blooming from late spring into late summer plants go dormant leaving nothing above ground except the tall stems with green then brown, small ball shaped seed capsules. Cut them off to prevent self-seeding. Plants do not spread under ground very much, but any small piece left in the ground after digging can grow into a new plant. Best in part shade in moisture retentive but well draining soils. People sometimes confuse this attractive plant with the look alike Campanula rapunculoides which spreads by way of runners.

Zones 3-9

Surface sow and germinate the seeds around F45 -50, higher temps will produce poorer results. Germination is irregular, from 1-8 weeks.

[Blue Umbrella]{A. africanus} 'Lily of The Nile' or 'African lily'

Use in full sun, great as a pot plant on a deck or patio. Does very well in the perennial border (best with light mulch over winter). The rest of us can grow this plant as a pot plant or in a green house. Plants are bulbous and normally bloom in July and August and needs full sun to thrive. During the winter pots should be brought inside and placed in a very bright window. Tall stems toped with umbels of blue flowers over the sword like smooth green leaves. A graceful plant that prefers moist but well draining soils and is said to bloom better as they become more crowded, so do not divide unless you need to (when the pot begins to break). This medium blue selection makes a great cut flower and will bloom in two or three years from seed.

This species is winter hardy only in zones 8 - 11. Cover seeds completely, darkness need for germination, use F 75 with germination starting in 3-15 weeks.

Plants have many different scents like anise, some are pleasant to smell others are a bit too strong for me, can be used to make a scented potpourri. Of all the different Agastache that I have grown -- this selection produces, to me, the best scents, which are on the more sweet' side, instead of the 'pungent.' Plants grow 30-40 inches tall with strongly upright stems and bloom for an extended time in summer and fall. Great plants for growing in sun or half shade. I like the nice upright form of these plants. Good cut flowers too. Easy and blooms the first year, best color when the it cool out, so a good choice for sowing in early summer for late summer and fall blooming. This selection is very hardy and has grown for me many years in my zone four garden.

Most plants come in shades of blue from soft blue to dark blue with a few other colors once in a while. Plants do well on most any soil including heavy clay. Plants are drought tolerant. The multi-stemmed clumps produce good cutting material and dead heading produces another flush of blooms all along the stems. Plants self seed around but not to the point of becoming weedy. They look nice coming up in amongst my Hosta and stray plants are easy to pull out of the ground when only a year or two old. Pinch back the top of the plant in early July to promote a more compact habit and heavy branching.

Zones 4-9.

Lightly cover seeds, with germination in 5-15 days at F 70.

'Silver Alyssum' BRASSICACEAE:

Great plants that grow 10 to 12 inches tall and form a thick bushy 24 inch a wide mound of silver gray foliage that is covered with soft yellow flowers in mid to late spring. The plants have flowers here and there until late summer. Use in dryer areas like sandy and rocky soils. I like this plant used as a carpet over a large area, nice sight to behold looking like soft yellow clouds over the ground. For me in Minnesota, the plants are what I would call semi-evergreen, with silver green wiry stems that more or less keep there leaves on through winter. In the spring plants produce a robust growth of new foliage and then flower. Trim plants back in the fall or early spring to make thicker growth. Like most plants in the mustard family this species likes well drained soils and is drought tolerant. Full sun to light morning shade. Thriving even in sandy soils.

Zones 4-7. Sow seed and cover lightly, light helps for best germination, 3 weeks. 70F. do not over water.

Best when grown in full sun, which will promote the best leaf color, but the plants can tolerate partial shade, especially in areas with very hot summers. Do not provide an overly rich soil because the leaves are less vibrant in coloration and the plants usually will need staking to hold them upright.

Large Forest Anemone or Snowdrop Anemone

Attractive, sometimes gently nodding, clean white colored flowers, that are somewhat fragrant. The plants start blooming in late spring and keep blooming for a number of weeks. The flowers are 1.5 to 2 inches wide with yellow stamens clustered in their centers and are held 8 to 15 inches or so above the ground atop the center of the plants. Plants grow into spreading clumps in open woodlands or fields. Grow in well-drained soils that are moist and rich in organic matter. Overly dry soils will retard good growth. Some re-blooming throughout the summer and white fluffy seed heads produced after flowering. I find the leaves of the Anemones very appealing with their flowers held up above the foliage.

Zones 3-7 (8). This species is native from Central and Eastern Europe to the Caucasus region. Just lightly cover seeds and use 50-65F, with germination often in three weeks, if no results move to 26 to 39F for 6 weeks, then back to 55F. Or sow and keep for one weeks at 65f, then move to 28-38f for 2 weeks, then move to 65F for germination. The first year plants spend most of their time developing a root system. If grown well can bloom the second year, but for most, blooming occurs the third year. Very nice colonizers forming attractive displays in openly shaded locations.

Jones’ Columbine or Blue Limestone Columbine (a-kwi-LEE-jee-a: JONES-ee-eye) Ranunculaceae:

Here is a small cushion forming columbine that only grows about 8 cm (8 cm = 0'3-5/32") tall. The foliage is densely crowded, with a glaucous coating and is often sessile. The smallest Aquilegia species, though there are two or more forms which grow larger than the typical species. The flowering stems are without leaves. The upturned, short-spurred flowers are solitary and produced on upright stems. The sepals are blue to purple in color and 15 to 22 mm (22 mm = 0'0-28/32") long, with a spreading mouth. The blades are blue, 8 to 13 mm (13 mm = 0'0-1/2") long. The spurs are blue, 8 to 15 mm (15 mm = 0'0-19/32") long and straight. Not an easy columbine to grow but worth the work when done so, with a limestone based soil a must for best results. Plants are slow growing and they have small rootstocks that should not be wet during winter. Under humid conditions powdery mildew can be a problem. Optimally grown plants will bloom some the second year, though most bloom the third. Grown most often in a scree bed, under glass or outside protected by a large rock.

Zones 3-8

Native from Montana and Wyoming, where this species is found growing in limestone, rocky alpine and subalpine areas. Seed germination can be erratic, some germinate right away and ungerminated seeds should be kept for a year or two.

Swamp Milkweed

Nice form with dark to light pink lavender flowers with a few white plants mixed in too. Fragrant flowers loved by butterflies. Easy to grow from seed and long lived plants for the border garden or pond planting. Loved by butterflies and long blooming in midsummer. Plants grow 3 to 4 feet tall and do best in full sun but they grow and flower well in a good amount of shade too. Moisture loving species that grows in damp to wet soils but growing nicely in average garden soil also. Plants grow 4 feet tall and in cultivation will have as many as 12 stems with the tops covered with umbels of flowers. Should produce a good number of nice dark flowering plants too. Use around ponds, lakes, and low ground or in the garden. Do not let the Monarch Butterflies have their way with this plant-they love it and will lay their eggs on it and the caterpillars will eat away all the leaves. Attractive in the garden, give the plants some light shade during the hottest part of the day and they will grow in dry soils as long as the soils are deep and they can spread out their root system. In the spring one should be careful to not remove the plants during spring planting, since the emergence of new shoots is late and occurs after most all other plants have come out of the ground.

Butterfly-Weed or Pleurisy Root or Orange milkweed or Butterfly milkweed or Butterfly Weed (ass-KLE-pee-us: too-BER-ohh-suh) Asclepiadaceae:

Plants with deep tap roots producing bright orange flowers in summer. Loved by the Monarch Butterfly. Full sun to light shade, dry to moist soils, Does well even in very sandy soils, takes heat and drought very well. Plants are very late to break their dormancy in the spring so be careful not to plant a new plant in its spot or cut the top off the root when working the soil. Flowers the second year from seeding or if started early will bloom a little the first year. The flower color is a very unique bright orange and makes a very showy display. Once plants are established, they will live many years and can be difficult to remove. I had one plant that was dug out of the ground three years in a row. The taproot can go down a few feet and when digging up the plant it is not always possible to get all the roots. This being the case, the plants can grow back from the left over roots. But do not worry - plants are never weedy and they stay were they are planted. I find them very appealing if planted with a shady background were the flower color then stands out starkly or mixed in with tall upright growing plants. A combination I enjoyed very much was an odd paring with Iris pseudacorus.

'Astilbe' can be used in perennial borders, pond edges and at the edge of woods or under tall open trees. These plants are a little more drought tolerant than the the others, they perform best in lightly shady environments were the soil does not become dry, they do not need wet soil but resent dry conditions. The more sun you give them the more they will flower-but they also will need more moisture in the soil. I would say that at a minimum your Astilbe should receive 3 hours of direct sun and the rest of the day should be open bright shade. A good indicator that your location receives enough light to grow Astilbe is -- would lawn grass grow thick in that location? If there is not enough light to grow thick grass, then its to dark to grow great Astilbe plants. They will live and flower in less light but not grow to be the thick clumps and put on the spectacular flower displays. Make sure plants receive water after they are done blooming into late summer. Many people take good care of their plants until they are done blooming, then neglect them after. Asilbe grow new roots and form the buds in mid to late summer than will be the new growth for next year, if they dry out they will not perform as well the next year. After 5 or so years of good growth plants should be dug and divide, the best time for division is after they are done blooming, but they can be divided and replanted any time from very early spring into early fall.

Zones 4-8

Fine seeds, surface sow, light needed for best germination, 1-4 weeks at F 70 days and F.50 nights. Keep soil moist but not wet. Best if sown into a pot and then place the pot in a plastic bag. Germination can be delayed without the variable night/day temps. Needs some work for best results.

Plants grow 4.5 feet tall and have clusters of pale-yellow ,bean like flowers in mid to late summer. Attractive upright plants with long upright, compound leaves. The plants look interesting early in the year with a promise of something spectacler th,e flowers are not bright and showy - so a type of anti-climax for those that see the blooms for the first time. One would expect more from such an impressive display of foliage and the thick stems that are produced earlier in the year. The flowers are not that showy but still an interesting native plant that likes moist but well drained soils in part shade to full sun. Deep rooted tap roots, so plant were you want them to grow early, will not take being dug up and moved.

Zones 3-9

Soak seeds in warm water for 12 hours. Sow and thinly cover seeds with soil medium with germination starting in 4 weeks at 41ºF, Germination can be spread-out over a few weeks, high temps can delay germination.
