Mullein'or Turkish Mullein or Silver Mullein (Ver-BAS-cum: bom-by-SIF-er-um) SCROPHULARIACEAE:

Plants grow a 60-72 inch tall spike of flowers the second year. The first year they have large silver white colored -wholly textured leaves that lay low to the ground. Plants stand out in the landscape with their white powdered wooly leaves and stems topped off with soft medium yellow colored flowers over a few weeks in midsummer. A large verbascum that makes a dramatic statement in the garden. Plants are easy to grow from seed and are biennial that will form a large rosette of woolly haired, silver coated leaves the first year. In its second growing season, it sends up a candelabrum of 5 foot stalks that have 3/4-inch sulfur-yellow colored, round flowers. It prefers a sunny location in well-draining soils but tolerates most soil conditions except very wet. The tall spires of flowers add some height interest to the garden and look real nice on a bank. Will flower June-August. For the most part plants act as biennials but are really monocarpic, and if one removes the flowering stems before flowering plants will live many years and produce wide clumps of very attractive silver colored leaves. Needs full sun and dry soils in the winter and early spring.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Best to sow seeds in trays and transplant out plants when large enough to handle. If you are going to direct sow the seeds, the ground should be weed free and level and gently watered a few times each day until the seeds have germinated and the seedlings have established them selves.

When direct sowing:

Be careful that weeds do not spring up and smoother out the seedlings.

Do not let the ground become overly dry. The soil does not need to be wet but moist, best to water often and not heavily.

Avoid heavy rains or watering, this will wash away the seeds and seedlings before they become established.

Before direct sowing, clean off all weeds and turn over the soil and level and rake well. Mix seeds with fine sand or sugar so that the seeds can be spread more evenly over the area.

Water the ground first then spread the seeds.

Zones 3-8

Corsican violet VIOLACEAE:

A choice small species with decumbent stems (means that the stems come out from the plant and lay down and the ends of the stems grow upward)with many blue flowers. Blooms well the first year and puts on a very showy display the second year, starting in late spring and blooming throughout the summer. I like to mix them in pots and baskets were their long stems tumble over the edges and the large open-faced flowers face outwards - a good choice. Full sun to half-day shade. Blooms all summer into fall. Flowers include all blue, some with light markings and others with white 'lips' with lighter face markings. Flowers are held up 5 to 7 inches off the ground during flowering and plants grow to be 8 to 10 inches wide. Best in full sun or some light shade, we have a few plants that have been growing in shade most of the day and they struggle and become long and leggy but have lived for three years that way and have bloomed a little. But in full sun the number of flowers produced cover the plants in solid clouds of blue.

Zones 4-8

Native to the grassy areas of Corsica.
