This bush-like plant has long wiry stems that grow out 18-24 inches, the top of the stems are covered with small lilac-rose flowers with purplish dots. Plants flower over a very long period from early summer to frost. The small rounded shiny, dark green leaves and the stems with the small flowers give this plant an attractive appearance mixed in with grasses. The foliage is scented and the plants are somewhat evergreen. Attractive to bees and butterflies. They will self seed around but not to a difficult degree. In the spring the foliage forms a mat on the ground which adds late winter and spring interest. Best in full sun or part shade in moisture retentive but well draining soils. Blooms for almost two months in late mid to late summer. Late in the year if the air is warm and humid plants can suffer from powdery mildew. With cooler temperatures the flowers become more intense in color. Plants can be divided in early spring.
