    Centaurea americana is an annual with branched stems and large lavender-pink flower heads that are a softer color in the middle. Plants grow 3 to 5 feet tall and have 4 inch wide flower heads. The phyllaries which hold the flowers look like a basket - giving plant the common name "basketflower". the plants are thorn-less and showy and used in cutting arrangements, blooms early summer. A good subject for a butterfly garden and birds love to feed on the seeds once the plants are done blooming, will self seed some but this can be prevented by cutting down the plants after they bloom if you wish. A showy, easily cultivated wildflower for full sun in well draining soils.

        Persian Cornflower kent-OW-ree-a: dee-al-BAH-ta)

        The species name alludes to the silver-white undersides of the leaves. Attractive deeply cut foliage and 2 inch wide, rose-pink colored flowers with softer colored tips. The flowers are shaped like sunflowers and have lacy fringed edges and fluffy centers. Plants grow 15 to 20 inches tall and about the same in width. Nice plant for a sunny location, growing well even in a dry area. Long lived plants that bloom late spring and early summer. Useful as an edging and the flowers can be used for cutting material too. Some rebloom often in the fall. Can self seed and plants grow into nice clumps that can be divided every few years. Full sun to some shade in well draining soils. Easy to grow under most garden conditions, does well in chalky soils too.

          Yellow Hard Head or Globe Cornflower (Kent-OW-ree-a: mak-ro-CEP-a-la)

          Large bright yellow-gold thistle like heads of flowers on top of 3 to 4 foot tall stems. Long lived plants that do very well in dry, well drained soils. In the spring long medium green leaves are produced near the ground and plants flower in late spring/early summer. The flowers are enclosed in bronze-copper colored bracts which make good cut flowers or dried decorations. After flowering the seed heads produce a 'button' of very soft white hairs, that can be clean up and used as an odd dried flower or fun tactile toy for children. Plants are large and somewhat coarse looking but the flowers are bright and showy while in bloom for a few weeks. A good plant for the 'neglected' garden, were they will live for many years and not need any extra care. The species name means 'large headed'.

            Mountain Bluet or Perennial Cornflower

            Grows one foot tall and has very attractive 2 inch wide blue-violet flowers that have darker reddish - violet centers. Very showy flower display in late spring. Best growth in the north were it can form nice sized clumps by way of spreading underground stems, in the south plants are less robust growing and should be divided every three years to rejuvenate them. Generally an easy and adaptable garden plant with electric blue, pin-wheel shaped flowers for a few weeks, if dead headed some re-blooming can occur. Full sun to open shade. Plants do self seed some and new plants can pop up here and there.
