            Yellow Coneflower or Bush's Coneflower

This is the odd one in the group, while the rest have purple-pink flowers with white forms, this one has yellow flowers, or more accurately yellow disk rays. An interesting addition to the prairie planting or back of the boarder. Plants start off slowly, with the first year spent growing a tap root with only a few low growing, rough leaves produced.

Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours, sow and cover seeds, darkness needed for best germination. Germination takes place from 10-50 days at F 70. If little germination after 3 weeks move to the fridge for 3-4 weeks. You can put the seeds in a plastic baggy or small jar with some moist paper towel and put in the fridge, check them every few weeks and once germination starts, sow all the seeds.

The wide petals are held out horizontal from the center cones. The flowering stems make for a very long lasting cut flower in a vase and they can be dried for winter decorations. This selection grows about 3.5 feet tall. Named after the breeder Magnus Nilsson of Sweden. Grow in full sun in well draining soils; plants are drought tolerant and long lived. Attractive to butterflies and when done blooming the seeds within the dried cones are loved by seed eating birds. With an early start there will be some flowering the first year, grows into a thick clump in a few years that can be divided in spring. Contrasts nicely with 'White Swan' and any resulting offspring from a cross are very heavy bloomers and worth while too.

Like most Echinacea, germination is best after a 8 week period of cool moist stratification, followed by varying the temperature between the day and night, say 65-75F days and 40-50 nights. When sowing do not cover the seeds completely, light produces best results.

A perennial that reproduces only by seed. This is a very different but appealing accent plant that will grow well in difficult soils that are dry and hot. This species is a native of the central and eastern USA, where they are found in dry prairie eco-systems. The flowering heads look somewhat like Echinops ritro, but with a silver-white tinted blue color instead, the flowers age to an all silver white. The yucca-like foliage is long and thin and adds much to the over all presentation of the plants in the landscape. The leaves can reach 80 cm (2.6 ft.) in length. Best planted in groups of three with plenty of space between groups. Plants can grow from 3 to 5 feet tall and 12 to 24 inches wide; in moist overly rich soils they may need staking for the first year or two of blooming. Flowering occurs in July and August. Plants are long-lived under good conditions and may self-seed on open ground. E. yuccifolium is found throughout the eastern United States west to the Great Plains, but is rare in many localities - its listed as threatened or as special concern in Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio. The species name refers to the long, narrow leaves that look like yucca leaves.

Plants form a rounded, basketball sized clump of yellow 'flowers' in early spring. Growing 12 to 18 inches tall. Showy and neat clumps in the spring with a few weeks of flowering and in summer the plants are covered with little round, yellow-green buttons atop light green foliage. Leaves turn a reddish color in the fall. Euphorbia polychroma is very drought tolerant and not for wet soils or for those that like to over fertilize. Plants grow from a deep carrot-like taproot. Best shape and growth - in full sun on soils that are nitrogen poor. Much loved in spring when in bloom with bright sulphur yellow bracts. Plants are neat and tidy all summer in even very poor soils were other plants burn up and pass away. Will bloom in two years. Some reseeding on open bare ground. Plants bloom the secound year. Deer do not eat them but rabbits sometimes do.

They are very much like Euphorbia myrsinites but more up-right growing and less winter hardy. The flowers are produced in yellow bracts with some plants even having orange-red colored bracts. Put Euphorbia rigida in full sun in well draining soils.

Part sun is good to start off with. Germination can be spread out over many months. The seeds are about the size of a small pea seed. Or sow in the fall outside for germination next winter or spring.
