                                                      Lamiaceae:

Here is a creeping plant with a scent, used as a ground cover or filler. It is an attractive and useful small creeping plant with a strong minty scent. The scent is said by some to remind them of wintergreen. Once established plants form fast traveling, dense mats of glossy sheened, dark green leaves. The lavender colored flowers are produced in whorls around the tops of the stems. This species has chemicals that repel insects, and is often used in gardens to repeal insects from other garden plants. It should NOT be consumed, because it is toxic if eaten above a certain amount; the oils in the plants are high in pulegone, a highly toxic volatile organic compound, which harms the liver.

Zones 6 to 9. Or grown as an annual plant in more northern locations. Native to Ireland, and across southern and central Europe, to the Ukraine. Surface sow seeds and use 65-75F, germination in 5-34 days.

It self seeds freely and on open soils and can be weedy. Your cats will love this stinker; the pungent foliage scent is unpleasant at best. I do not know about its use in the garden - all other Nepeta have some attractive feature to them, but this one is only good for the cats. The lemon scented type is real nice, cats also like it also, but maybe not as much as the normal scented form. Best used in a location were you can allow it to self seed and not fear that it will take over and smother out any thing else you want. Plants grow 3 to 4 feet tall, forming a bushy clump that blooms in mid summer. Naturalized over much of the US in grassy to disturbed areas, it can even be found in open woodlands. Drought tolerant.

This form has lemon scented foliage and is worth while growing in a garden dedicated to scents. Plants grow 40-60 inches tall in sun or light shade. The off white flowers have a light purplish cast to them and sometimes have darker purple spots. Easy to raise, doing well in dry soils and light shade, or full sun. Will bloom the first year (5 to 7 weeks after germination), the new basal foliage in the fall is very scented.

Plants have deep blue flowers that cover 18 inch (18 in = 45.7 cm) tall stems, the plants grow 2 to 3 feet (3 ft = 91.4 cm) wide as they mature. The robust growing plants grow 18 inches tall and have thicker spikes of deep-blue flowers than other Nepeta x faassenii selections. The thick clumps have upright stems, and are very showy in pots, large containers, and in the border as an edging or mass planting.. Like most catmints the foliage is scented. A good choice for a sunny well drained garden or walkway. Flowering starts in late spring, cut back the spent flowers in late July to encourage more flowering and to tidy up the clumps. Easy to grow in average, dry to well draining soils, best in full sun to part shade with more shade producing plants that tend to grow longer stems that sprawl. Once established, plants thrives in dry soils and are very tolerant of drought. Some flowering the first year. Not bothered by insect or fungal problems and not eaten by animals. The seeds are on the small side but easy enough to sow, the seedling have a good growth rate and can be transplanted out in one month after germination. Long lived perennials.
