Grown as Annuals that willingly self seed. Blooms well inside and only in five weeks from germination. The flowers are scented, somewhat like grape juice. The flowers are somewhat like Jacob's ladders and plants are durable and long blooming - they will self sow on open ground.

The spikes are attractive and can be used as cut flowers in a vase too. Plants tolerates wet sites, but are intolerant of real dry ones; growing best in a rich moisture retentive soil in part shade to full sun, they will grow in shade but the stems tend to flop down under the weight of the flowers. Evergreen winter rosettes of low growing foliage give rise to flowers in summer and early fall. Plants spread by rhizomes and some-times by self seeding. The flowers are not as large as its better know relative but are still nice in a wildflower garden or planted along the margin of a woods with moist soils.

Best in moist soils were it spreads out to form wide clumps. For full sun to light shade, long lived, forming woody like underground stems that remind me of fern roots (rhizomes). The foliage is semi-evergreen and remains green over much of the winter, even here in Minnesota, in exposed locations it will 'freeze off' or if the plants become very dry in summer they will go dormant and most of their leaves will yellow and disappear, with new growth when the plants receive enough water again. Blooming period is from early to late summer. This species is more tolerant of drier soils than most of the others, doing well in most any garden soil that does not bake dry in the summer.

Plants flower at about 16 inches in height with strawberry shaped flowers that have darker red centers. In the south give the plants some shade during the afternoon hours to prevent leaf burn, in the north give plenty of sun to prevent a semi-floppy habit. Long blooming, not the star of the flower garden but a worthwhile addition.

The flowers vary in color and this selection having yellow flowers; the flowers have a powdery-white eye. Plants are good sized and leafy, with flowering stems growing 12 to 18 inches tall, but sometimes up to 3 feet tall. A choice and fragrant plant for the primrose garden. The umbels of flowers crowd the tops of the stems with bell-like flowers. Blooming in early spring with yellow flowers. Grows best in full sun in moister retentive soils, not really a wet soil species. Under hot conditions give the plants some afternoon shade. Deciduous foliage.

Surface sow seeds and use F 60-70, germination is spread out over a month or so. Might be helpful to seal up in a plastic bag. If no germination in 4 weeks move to to 30-39F for five weeks. Then back to 65F. Keep moist, seedlings start off small so be careful when watering - if you can water from below this will be helpful. As is true for most plants with small seeds, the young plants are small when they first germinate, so for the first month or so keep away from heavy rains.
