Potentilla

These herbaceous plants are pest-free and normally undemanding and grow best in full sun in poor dry soils. They are long flowering with strawberry-like pleated leaves. The flowers are shallow saucer-shaped and come in a number of diffrent colors ranging from pale white, yellow, pink to luxurious deep red. Flowering from the end of May until the end of August. There are a number of species and many are worthy of a place in the landscape. The nepalensis cultivars are generally the largest of the herbaceous potentillas. P. nepalensis 'Roxana' has a coppery tinge to its pink flowers. Potentillas should have as much sun as you can give them and do best in poor, well-drained soils. P. atrosanguinea though, prefers good soil and a cooler position than other potentillas.

Bright rosy red colored flowers over large attractive strawberry-like foliage. Plants flower at about 16 inches in height with strawberry shaped flowers that have darker red centers. In the south give the plants some shade during the afternoon hours to prevent leaf burn, in the north give plenty of sun to prevent a semi-floppy habit. Long blooming, not the star of the flower garden but a worthwhile addition.
