          Chinese Foxglove

Carmine-red colored flowers that have yellow throats. Plants grow 3 to 4.5 feet tall, they spread by way of stolons to form large colonies. This species does not like real hot conditions, but is very drought tolerant once established. Attractive as a cut flower that blooms in late spring and again in summer. The flowers are somewhat bell shaped and look some-what like a Fox Glove flower. It differes from Digitalis flowers by having petals that have petunia like texture and the mouth has a small upper lip of two petals and the larger lower lip has three petals. Grow in full sun were summers are on the cool side and in part shade were summer are hot. Best growth and flowering occurs in moist, rich soil - but these conditions also promote the greatest spread, so give the showy plants plenty of space.

                      (rod-JER-zee-ah: ess-kew-lih-FOE-lee-ah)

Rodgersia aesculifolia has attractive palmate, wrinkled leaves that can nearly 2 feet wide. The textured, bronze tinted leaves have red veins and leaf stalks are reddish-brown. Distinctive two-foot-long, upright flower spikes with pinkish to near white flowers are produced in mid summer. This species has a unique look in the garden and is best grown in humus rich soils that are on the damp side. It can be grown in full sun, but the soils must not dry out otherwise the plants can burn. Plants that do not bloom after a few years in the garden indicate that the soil is to dry during the growing season, best in partial shade. When grown well, they make a stand out addition to the landscape, planted by water, in a woodland, or in other moist garden sites.
