Pearlwort or Scotch Moss (sa-JI-nuh: sub-yoo-LAH-tuh) Caryophyllaceae:

Moss-like plants that form a tight mound of soft foliage. The Low growing, mat-forming plants with small white flowers bloom in spring or summer. This species works as a ground cover, growing around one inch tall. Used between paving stones and walkway cracks. Good foliage texture. Space plants 610 inches apart. Plants are used as ground cover around stepping-stones, in rockeries and in large pots. Grow in sun in cool, moisture retentive soils, plants have shallow root systems and are intolerant of dry or very wet locations. Many in warmer locations have the best results in light to moderate shade in moist soil, plants tend to rot under hot, humid conditions.

    Zones 4-10

The seeds are very fine and care should be taken when sowing them. The soil should be level and moist before sowing, after sowing the area should be gently tamped down to ensure good soil and seed contact. It is best to water from below until plants are established. If sowing outside, heavy rains and large water droplets from sprinklers can kill the germination seeds and developing seedlings.

The Mounds of foliage are silver hairy, with the leaves attractively lacy cut and some times even called fern like. The scent of the foliage reminds me of 'squashed green tomatoes.' The softly hairy but stiff foliage is produced on square stems with terminal racemes of blue flowers. The flowers have long hairs on the upper lip. Early summer bloomers that grow about 2 feet wide with 18 inch tall stems that are lax, reaching a height of 8 inches or so. Sun in well drained to dry soils. After flowering cut back heavily and plants will quickly re-bloom. Takes a lot of hot sun and will take a good amount of frost and still look good. A nice rock garden plant in well draining soils, both for its flowers and foliage. The genus name Salvia is from the word 'Safe' in Latin.

A cold winter hardy species with spikes of violet-blue flowers in mid summer. Plants reach 20 to 28 inches in height over low growing basal foliage composed of rugose(wrinkled) leaves. The flowering stems are branched and have no to few leaves, they produce somewhat dense spikes of flowers that have a tendency to lean a little. The species name means something like 'From the Woods' and the species is native from Europe. Not long living in hot soils or under very humid conditions, but an attractive addition to a sunny border. The plants are scented with a pungent but pleasant odor. The folaige is low growing and deadheading will produce an extended blooming season. Blooms the first year from a early spring sowing. Can self seed some on open ground. Looks best used in large clumps or planted in long lines along a border or walkway.

                                                              Zones 3-9

Best when grown in full sun or light shade in well draining soils - they do not like to be damp in the summer. Takes a good amount of frost. It grows around 2.5 to 3 feet tall with branched stems that produce many, very small, rose colored flowers that nearly do not protrude past the calyx (and often the corolla is shorter than the calyx lobes. Plants will bloom three or four times during the year and they produce seeds very readily. It could be a form of Salvia plebeia but the flowers seem smaller and the foliage is shallowly lobed plus the seeds seem to be too large (2.5mm x 1.5mm). Not very showy flowers but interesting flowering stems that at first seem to promise much but when it does flower is a let down. Could be weedy also since the seeds readily germinate as soon as they are dropped.

Plants Bloom late spring and early summer with spikes of white flowers tinted with violet or pink. The flowering spikes are produced over low growing wrinkled foliage. The scented rosettes of leaves generate several flower stems each. The whole plant is scented like citrus, some say the scent is like Lava soap. Half hardy perennials that develop a woody base. They have evergreen lyre-shaped grey-green 4 inch (4 in = 10.2 cm) long leaves. The foliage is produced in thick basal rosettes and the flowering stems have much leaves reduced in size. The underside of the foliage is covered with many silver hairs. The pleasant citrus aroma is released when the foliage is brushed or bruised. They can be grown as annuals if started early. Grows around 12 inches (12 in = 30.5 cm) tall.

Blooms heavy in mid to late spring and on-and-off during summer and fall. Full sun in the north to light shade in the southern part of the country. They like well drained - even dry soils but do best with cool nights and some soil moisture. Under hot and dry conditions or in to much shade they tend to flop open. Cut back after the first flush of flowering is done to produce a second flush of more compact growing flower stems.

For best seed germination: Sow in the fall and keep pots outside over winter for spring germination, needs a few months of cool, moist conditions. The seedlings start off life growing very slowly, so care should be taken to not allow them to dry out.

The flower display is airy and open and the flowers mix well with other nearby plants. Attractive lacy foliage with tall upright stems that have many flowers produced over a few months in late summer and fall. The flowers are on tall wiry stems and plants keep on blooming even after a frost. Plant in full sun to part shade in well drained soils, drought tolerant. Fun and long blooming from mid summer till hard frost. After the flowers are done blooming, egg-shaded seed clusters develop. Here in Minnesota it's the last plant to keep blooming in the year, lasting well past many solid frosts. For a scabiosa, the plants are long lived. Best display when planted in groups of three or five plants spaced out about 10 inches apart. Does well in rock or brick cracks. Drought tolerant. Some blooming the first year with a winter or spring sowing. Self seeds, but not overwhelmingly and any unwanted plants are easily disposed of.

Plants have a bushy habit with upright stems and many small flowers. When done blooming the flowers fall off leaving behind cups that hold the seeds ( this is were the name 'Skullcap' comes from) This species is not as temperamental about growing conditions as the rock garden types, it still is best on well draining soils in part shade to full sun. Plants grow nicely on slopes. Mixes well with Nepeta and Phlomis. Not overly showy in bloom from a distance, with small flowers but the clumps are shaped well and attractive with deeply veined dark leaves. Up close the flowers have 'personality'. Blooms late spring into mid summer.

Best in dry well drained locations in full sun, but will take some shade too but then growing with out the tinting. This is a spreader, with parts of the plants shedding off and rooting and makes for a nice thick ground cover. The yellow flowers and produced in good numbers and are clustered on top of short upright flowering stems. For the most part these plants grow on-top of the ground, so they do well even were the soil is very thin- even on bare rock. Best used in a rock garden or on a gravel bed, since plants are so low growing they do not compete well with other plants, but they spread well to form thick carpets. They are not overly drought tolerant but need supplemental water during dry periods.

Foliage has very dark bronze-red tinted foliage. Plants have a carpeting ground cover-like habit. The plants produce bright rose-pink colored flowers that reach 6 inches in height and bloom in July and August, they complement the 3 inch tall mounded dark foliage. Durable and long-lived. Best in hot, well draining soils in full sun. Nice edging display or used on rock slopes. Shady conditions will produce less color and sparser growth, hot muggy weather for extended periods will cause loss of some foliage.

Plants grow from 9 to 16 inches tall, blooming in late spring. Bushy small plants from a single stem give rise to blueish-green tinted, fan shaped leaves. The plants and the seeds look like Aquilegia - which is the correct genus for this species, but the flowers have no spurs, making it the only species of Columbine that naturally has no spurs. The stems are often tinted purplish too. Best in a sunny location with some afternoon shade or under open dappled shade, in good draining soil but not overly dry. Plants bloom the second year if started in spring and for us here in zone 4, live about 5 years.

Finches feed on the nutritious seeds in late fall and winter. In midsummer and early fall Silphium perfoliatum produces large open branched corymbs like inflorescence with 50 to 100+, 2 to 3 in yellow daisy like flowers. Silphium perfoliatum grows from 6-10 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide. Plants like a moister soil than other species but do very well in my drier sunny garden with some light watering during very dry periods. Long lived and appealing-plant in the prairie garden or the back of the border, or plant in the open woodland garden. Loved by butterflies and honey bees.

Plants bloom in mid spring and in late summer are topped off with red berries. This is a native North American wood land plant that grows well in the shade garden. Over time plants will grow in to large clumps and are particularly attractive growing on a slope. Will take 4 or 5 years to bloom from seed but once established, very long lived. Plants have alternate leaves on arching stems; leaves are somewhat hairy and light green in color, with tapered bases and short petioles. Flowering in mid to late spring; the creamy white, fragrant flowers are small but clustered together in thick tapered panicles. In late summer and early fall the plants are burdened down with berries that are red/brown with small dots on them, in the fall the fruit dries to a bright red color but the fruits to not persist for long on the plant.

This species grows 24-30 inches tall and will form a clump 36 inches wide after a number years - in the wild they tend to grow as single stemmed plants or developing into small clusters of stems spread-out over a few square feet. Long lived and easy to grow and can be divided in spring. Long lived perennials that have nice white flowers in the spring and red berries in the fall.

Smilacina amplexicaulis has been reduced to a subspecies of the above species and is called 'Maianthemum racemosum subsp. amplexicaule. It is found in deciduous woodlands west of the Rocky Mountains from British Columbia south to Mexico. Plants with acute inflorescence, shorter than 2MM. Erect stems, leaves sessile with rounded leaf blades. Blooms mid spring. Propagation by seed or division of the rhizomes. A worthwhile plant to grow in the open shade garden.

It is one of the more attractive goldenrod species. The clumps can have ten or more upright stems. This species is sometimes confused with S. riddellii, which has folded and multinerved leaves. A worthy addition to a wild flower, wildlife garden, with moist but draining soils. Does well in normal garden soils and is attractive in the flower border too.

Plants are slowly spreading by way of short underground rhizomes, so in a garden setting may need to be contained or extra plants dug a removed every few years. Nice cut flower.

Plants grow about 3-4 feet (4 ft = 1.22 m) tall with somewhat lax stems that produce a few large branches that are each terminated in a spike of rose-pink colored flowers that are produced over many weeks in mid to late summer to frost. Sun to light shade in moist soils. An interesting native plant to grow up amongst other plants like Iris and moisture loving grasses. Self seeds around and can be overwhelming of smaller plants. Best used as a naturalized plant in a 'wild' area. Easy enough to remove extra plants by pulling, but they spread under ground by way of stolons, making them hard to eliminate.
