    Silver Sage (sal-VEE-a: ar-GEN-tee-a)

Flat rosettes up to 3 feet wide of large, textured, silver-white colored, furry, broad, 6 to 8 inch long leaves. Flowers are produced in whorles around the 30 to 40 Inche tall stems, the claw shaped flowers are white in color (often tinted with yellow). Sow in late winter/early spring for a very impressive display of leaves the first year and flowers in summer the next year. Use in full sun (in the north) and part shade (in the south) in soils that are well draining, plants will not do that well under hot-humid conditions. Plants are by nature biennials or short-lived perennials, being monocarpic by nature. But if the flower stalks are removed before the plants make seed, they will often live and bloom for more than three. The species name means 'Silver like'

    Zones (4) 5-9

Native to southern Europe. Use 65-75ºF with germination starting in a few weeks and spread-out over a number of weeks. Surface sow seeds, light needed for best results.

Plants grow 3 to 5 feet tall but for best shape should be cut in half in early summer. Plants have medium green colored, thin foliage with a silvery cast and the flowers are produced in "spikes" on the top 1/5 of the stems. Bloom July to October with attractive azure sky blue colored flowers on somewhat lax growing stems. A showy and attractive species with a deep root system, once established should be left in place as the roots can go down over 6 feet deep into the soil. Blooms July - October. Will flower the first year if started in early spring, and blooms from August in to late fall, even after some frost. Can be lanky, but cutting back in early summer will produce bushier and more upright plants that blooming more heavily. Long flowering period and a nice rich blue color combined with drought tolerance makes Salvia azurea an ideal choice for a wild flower garden or used on a bank or side of a hill.

The scent of the foliage reminds me of 'squashed green tomatoes.' The softly hairy but stiff foliage is produced on square stems with terminal racemes of blue flowers. The flowers have long hairs on the upper lip. Early summer bloomers that grow about 2 feet wide with 18 inch tall stems that are lax, reaching a height of 8 inches or so. Sun in well drained to dry soils. After flowering cut back heavily and plants will quickly re-bloom. Takes a lot of hot sun and will take a good amount of frost and still look good. A nice rock garden plant in well draining soils, both for its flowers and foliage. The genus name Salvia is from the word 'Safe' in Latin.

Small purple-flowers on tall wispy stems 12 to 24 inches tall, blooming in late spring and early summer with some rebloom later in the year. A perennial that self seeds most often - well sometimes a lot.
Low growing, broad flat leaves are a dark purple color. Loved for its deep burgundy foliage. The color changes in the fall to a reddish hue. Looks well mixed with large rocks, low growing leaves might remind one of an Ajuga.

A cold winter hardy species with spikes of violet-blue flowers in mid summer. Plants reach 20 to 28 inches in height over low growing basal foliage composed of rugose(wrinkled) leaves. The flowering stems are branched and have no to few leaves, they produce somewhat dense spikes of flowers that have a tendency to lean a little. The species name means something like 'From the Woods' and the species is native from Europe. Not long living in hot soils or under very humid conditions, but an attractive addition to a sunny border. The plants are scented with a pungent but pleasant odor. The folaige is low growing and deadheading will produce an extended blooming season. Blooms the first year from a early spring sowing. Can self seed some on open ground. Looks best used in large clumps or planted in long lines along a border or walkway.

                                                        Zones 3-9

Surface sow the seeds, with germination in a few days at 65F. Seedlings have a good growth rate and can planted out in a few weeks. When not blooming, cut off old flowering stems and the plants are neat, low growing mats of foliage.

Best when grown in full sun or light shade in well draining soils - they do not like to be damp in the summer. Takes a good amount of frost. It grows around 2.5 to 3 feet tall with branched stems that produce many, very small, rose colored flowers that nearly do not protrude past the calyx (and often the corolla is shorter than the calyx lobes. Plants will bloom three or four times during the year and they produce seeds very readily. It could be a form of Salvia plebeia but the flowers seem smaller and the foliage is shallowly lobed plus the seeds seem to be too large (2.5mm x 1.5mm). Not very showy flowers but interesting flowering stems that at first seem to promise much but when it does flower is a let down. Could be weedy also since the seeds readily germinate as soon as they are dropped.

Plants Bloom late spring and early summer with spikes of white flowers tinted with violet or pink. The flowering spikes are produced over low growing wrinkled foliage. The scented rosettes of leaves generate several flower stems each. The whole plant is scented like citrus, some say the scent is like Lava soap. Half hardy perennials that develop a woody base. They have evergreen lyre-shaped grey-green 4 inch (4 in = 10.2 cm) long leaves. The foliage is produced in thick basal rosettes and the flowering stems have much leaves reduced in size. The underside of the foliage is covered with many silver hairs. The pleasant citrus aroma is released when the foliage is brushed or bruised. They can be grown as annuals if started early. Grows around 12 inches (12 in = 30.5 cm) tall.

Blooms heavy in mid to late spring and on-and-off during summer and fall. Full sun in the north to light shade in the southern part of the country.
