Named after Mount Gargano in Italy. The species is native from Italy and western Greece. Light blue, star shaped flowers, produced on stems that are 4 to 8 inches long. The stems are trailing and plants form a carpet 4 inches or so tall and 18 inches wide. Campanula garganica is an easily grown plants for rock walls or in the cracks of the stone path. Best in full sun but will also perform well in part shade. Flowering from early summer into late summer.

                                                  Zones 3-8

For best Gargano harebell germination, sow the seeds on the surface of a premoistened soil medium and keep at room temp for 6 weeks, requires light for germination. Then move to between 24 and 39F for 6 weeks, then to F65 for germination. Or in the fall or winter, sow in a pot and put in a plastic bag in a sheltered location outside away from direct afternoon sunlight for germination in spring. Some germination in 3 to 8 weeks if sown and kept at 60 to 65F.

Clump forming plants with large clusters of rich violet colored flowers grouped together in tight clusters at the ends of 20 to 28 inch tall stems. Nice cut flowers. Easily grown plants in most locations in full sun to light shade. Tends to flop over if plants do not receive over seven hours of direct sun. Reblooming if cut back when the main flush of flowers are finishing up. Plants bloom in early summer. Use in a sunny location in moisture retentive soil that are rich. Under hot conditions best when given some shade during the afternoon.

Zones 3-8. Surface sow seeds on to a moist seed medium and cover tray with glass or plastic. Germination in 1-3 weeks at F 65. It is helpful to use lighted days (but keep out of very bright direct sunlight -- the sun can dry the pots out quickly while the seedlings have no roots) and dark nights. Most plants will bloom the second year but if started early some blooming the first year.

This is a shorter growing strain that reaches a height of 6 to 12 inches in height. Use in full sun and part shade. Easy to grow plants flower for a long time in summer and with some dead heading will flower till frost. Clump forming plants can be divided in spring or after flowering. I am told this will produce dark blue colored flowers. To get a variety of flower colors in the shorter size that C. glomerata acaulis comes in, grow them next to C. glomerata 'alba' and save seed. Plants flower the same year sown if started in early spring. Does well in any typical garden soil that is not wet. When happy, will self seed but for me has never been a problem.

Drought tolerant. This species is a native member of the pea family found from Eastern and North Central North America. The compound foliage gives the Cassia genus a feathery appearance from a distance. This member of the pea family fixes nitrogen from the air improving soil fertility for those plants that grow around it. In July and August the plants send up racemes of bright yellow flowers that look some what like small pea flowers. The compound foliage turns golden-yellow in the fall. Plants grow best in moister retentive, sandy loam soils, but are drought tolerant once established. They form deep taproots and are best left in place once established. A most useful cut flower for the table or for drying with tall wiry stems that are held up above low growing silver-cast woolly foliage. The foliage is long up to 10 inches and thin maybe 1/2 to 3/4 inch wide with a few large teeth and forms a mat over the ground. So they are best grown by them selves in a cluster of five or more plants, which will prevent the foliage from being swallowed up under larger plants and put on a good floral display in the garden. The stems are 2 feet tall and plants put on a prolific display and respond well to deadheading. Plants do well in poor, well draining soils in full sun, were they will be free flowering during July into fall. Short lived over the winter in wet or heavy soils, doing best in well drained - dry chalky soils. The genus name means something to the effect 'love Potion' and they were used in magical potions by ancient Greeks to nab the one that got away. In flower arrangements it is still use to symbolize love.

As an interesting note-this plant, like many others, illustrates the fact that you cannot determine the winter hardiness of a plant by the geographic location that it comes from. Lightly cover seeds and use F70, germination 7-20 days with flowering in 15 weeks from sowing.

Attractive clumps with tall flowering stems reaching 4 to 7 feet tall. Plants will not bloom until the third year after germination but well worth the time invested in them. They form long lived clumps that can be divided every few years. A worthwhile species for an open shade garden. For a shade margin they give some height and thus are ideal along the edge of a woodland or wooded trail and driveway. They have attractive foliage, and mix well with other large woodland species. Best in moist, well draining soils in open shade to part sun.

Start seeds off with 16 weeks at 68-75F, move to 25-35F indefinitely, germination is spread out over two years. Best if moved outside during winter for the cold period. This species like many woodland species is often best sown in a prepared bed out side in the fall. A humus rich soil mixed with 25 percent sand or perlite, in an area that has morning sun but shade in the afternoon.

Blooms the first year, and can be short-lived without regular division. Grow in full sun in well draining soils that are on the dry side. Nice cut flowers and seed eating birds love to eat the seeds after the plants are done blooming. Seeds are large enough for easy seeding and plants transplant well for nice displays the same year. Effective in clumps of five plants spaced about 10 inches apart. Regular dead heading and cutting for table arrangements will prolong the already long blooming period.

Surface sow the seeds, light needed for best germination. Once germination begins it is helpful to very thinly cover them with soil medium. Use 65F, with seed germination in 5-20 days. Transplant out after a few weeks of growth and water as the ground becomes dry until seedling establishment.

The bushy plants grow 10-12 inches tall. Needs moisture retentive soils but a well drained location. Grow in full sun to part shade, intolerant of competition from larger plants. Coreopsis rosea resents dry soils, unlike most of the other Coreopsis species. A Humus-sand mix that is rich and moist will give to the best looking plants, that can grow into good sized spreading clumps up to 2 feet wide, in dry locations plants tend to be much more sparse.

Plants grow 12-18 inches tall. Mixes well with grasses and plants readily reseed. Birds and butterflies also like this plant: the butterflies for the flowers and the birds for the seeds. Long blooming period from May to August, plants are more or less annuals but self seed. Coreopsis grow best in any fertile, garden soil that is well drained and has a full exposure to the sun. Sow indoors at 70-degree temperature, 4 to 6 weeks before it is safe to plant outside. Seeds may also be sown directly where they are to grow when the soil is warm, cover lightly. Good subjects for large pots and cut flowers for small diplays. The attracrtive lacy foliage and large dark flowers mix well with other large pot plants. Give them a hair cut to promote shorter and bushy plants.

Blooming from mid summer to late fall with 2' wide soft golden yellow that looks like glowing butter. Flowers turning brown or purplish. Forms clumps by rhizomes (stems that spread out under ground.) Plants grow 4 to 8+ feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide but in good soil the plants will spread indefinitely, forming a large, showy clump. Plant in well drained soil in full sun or light shade. Deadhead to promote more flowering. This is a nice tall plant for the prairie garden with great foliage texture-at least in my opinion. A good tall plant that will keep on blooming in late summer into late fall. I like the soft appearance of this plant with the flowers mixed in atop the clumps, which can be very thick if grown well. Easily grown and long lived, grows well even in part shade. Effective used along the edge of the woods. A good choice for poor, dry soils. Plants can self seed on open soils, and it is best to give the plants some space to fill in. Birds like to eat the seeds in the fall.

Plants flower from 4 to 9 feet tall and can spread out about the same in width. Clump forming with evergreen leaves that arch out over the ground. Blooms in late summer. Sometimes grown in the north as an annual and dug in the fall and brought inside and stored cool and dry until next spring. Grown from seed, plants need two years of growth before they are large enough to flower, but well worth the wait.

Grows in open shade were it forms a bushy clump about 2 feet tall with atypical umbels of very small pinkish colored flowers produced in late summer and fall. Grow in moisture retentive soils, plants are not very drought tolerant but have done well in our dry beds with more than a half day of shade. Not long lived, the plants we have grow for about three or four years but will self seed some so new plants replace older plants reliably. In eastern Asia the plants are eaten, they have a slightly bitter taste which some describe as celery-like.

Germination is best when sown and keep at 45-55F, germination is spread-out over many weeks. Warm temps will delay germination.
