Senecio

Senecio is a large genus in the aster family, Asteraceae, that has including over 1000 species from all over the world. Some of the species have been moved to other genera, including many of the succulent ones to the genus Kleinia. Many species are common perennial or annual weeds, some are succulents native to tropical and subtropical areas. Senecio species have clusters of flower that form at the top of the plants, and the flower colors vary, including white, yellow, red and purple. The species include succulent, annual, perennial, aquatic, climber, shrub and small tree forms. They have daisy or aster-like flowers with rayed heads, produced in clusters at the top of the stems.

      Typically grown as an annual for its attractive silver-gray foliage. The plants are mounding with silvery, greenish-white, elliptic, lobed leaves. The plants grow up to 12 inches tall and about the same in width. Can over winter in warmer areas, or if mulched heavily with a dry mulch. The plants bloom the second year with small flowers that are mustard-yellow, produced in corymbs. Shear or pinch back plants if they become leggy. Tolerant of many soils, prefers full sun and a well-drained location in the border or a pot. A colorful foil between bright bedding plants like annual salvias and snapdragons. Often used as an edging or border plant.
