Plants have large attractive basel leaves that are smooth and dark green with a glossy sheen - making them different from other Veronicas that have leaves with teeth. The basil leaves persist through the winter and form a nice green mat in the spring. The upright stems grow 18 inches tall and the flowers cover 4 to 10 inches of the stems. Easy to grow plants that bloom the second year in early summer. Creeping rootstocks form nice dense mats over a few years. Veronica gentianoides is nice for the front of the border and rock garden. Use in full sun in well draining soils that stay moist, plants do not like really dry soils. Worthy of a place in the garden, even though not grown too often for some reason, maybe they are not yet that well know, not a stunningly showy plant from a distance but attractive and useful. Will bloom the second year but grow into nice clumps with attractive foliage the first year.

This species grows a little over five feet tall and has attractive whorled leaves that develop at the nodes around the stems. The blue-lilac colored flowers are produced in spike-like clusters at the tops of the stems. Looking like a giant Veronica. An interesting addition to the prairie planting or back of the border. Very showy when planted in groups. Grow in deep soils in full sun to light shade, best in moisture retentive soils. This is a spreading plant that will need some room. Grows in shade but will not flower.

Plants grow a width of 18-24 inches. Use in full sun to light shade, stems may be a bit lax but plants are like a giant form of Veronica with more or less upright stems and interesting whorled leaves that form around the stems. Blooms from mid summer to early fall. Deep rooted so once established, they are best left alone, long lived. Nice plants for the garden or wild flower display along a woodland edge.

Blooms well the first year and puts on a very showy display the second year, starting in late spring and blooming throughout the summer. I like to mix them in pots and baskets were their long stems tumble over the edges and the large open-faced flowers face outwards - a good choice. Full sun to half-day shade. Blooms all summer into fall. Flowers include all blue, some with light markings and others with white 'lips' with lighter face markings. Flowers are held up 5 to 7 inches off the ground during flowering and plants grow to be 8 to 10 inches wide. Best in full sun or some light shade, we have a few plants that have been growing in shade most of the day and they struggle and become long and leggy but have lived for three years that way and have bloomed a little. But in full sun the number of flowers produced cover the plants in solid clouds of blue.

Plants have deep violet-blue colored flowers which are born on leafless stalks from the center of the clumps. Blooms from early spring into early-mid summer. Leaves are divided into bird-foot-like segments with very narrow leaflets. The Divided leaves look like wild delphinium foliage - thus the common name of 'Larkspur Violet'. This species is similar in appearance to the 'Bird Foot Violet'(Viola pedata) but with smaller flowers that are more pea-like in shape while the Bird-Foot Violet has more open shaped flowers. Both species like open, lose ground that drains quickly in sun to part shade.
