Ovary inferior, 3-5-cel1ed; stigma 3-5-lobed. [Diminutive of the Latin campana, a bell.] About 300 species, natives of the northern hemisphere. In Eastern North America 12 species are native or have been naturalized, some 8 others occur in the southern and western parts of North America; all known as "Bell-flower". A large group of garden plants grown in the herbaceous border or rock garden, many species from alpine regions of the world are loved by rock garden enthusiasts. A large number of hybrids and cultivars have been produced. A number are grown as blooming pot plants and or cut flowers. All like full sun to some shade, some are spreading or can self seed under garden conditions.

    [Campanulastrum americanum] Tall Bellflower

Plants grow 4 to 6 feet (6 ft = 1.83 m) tall and have narrow stems with many small, star shaped, blue flowers. The flowers are spread-out along the top 2/3rds of the stems. The blue flowers have white centers. Best in full sun in moisture retentive but well draining soils that do not dry out. They will grow and flower well in areas with open shade, but tend to be tall and lax in heaver shade. When used in shade, they work well mixed with other tall plants that they can grow up threw, which can give them some support. Blooms late spring threw mid summer with some flowers remain into late summer. The blue flowers are flat faced instead of bell shaped and because of this difference and its native range are placed in its own genus.

    Zones 3-8

Germination in 1-3 weeks at F65. It is helpful to use lighted days (but keep out of very bright light) and dark nights.

Named after Mount Gargano in Italy. The species is native from Italy and western Greece. Light blue, star shaped flowers, produced on stems that are 4 to 8 inches long. The stems are trailing and plants form a carpet 4 inches or so tall and 18 inches wide. Campanula garganica is an easily grown plants for rock walls or in the cracks of the stone path. Best in full sun but will also perform well in part shade. Flowering from early summer into late summer.

                Zones 3-8

For best Gargano harebell germination, sow the seeds on the surface of a premoistened soil medium and keep at room temp for 6 weeks, requires light for germination. Then move to between 24 and 39F for 6 weeks, then to F65 for germination. Or in the fall or winter, sow in a pot and put in a plastic bag in a sheltered location outside away from direct afternoon sunlight for germination in spring. Some germination in 3 to 8 weeks if sown and kept at 60 to 65F.

Clump forming plants with large clusters of rich violet colored flowers grouped together in tight clusters at the ends of 20 to 28 inch tall stems. Nice cut flowers. Easily grown plants in most locations in full sun to light shade. Tends to flop over if plants do not receive over seven hours of direct sun. Reblooming if cut back when the main flush of flowers are finishing up. Plants bloom in early summer. Use in a sunny location in moisture retentive soil that are rich. Under hot conditions best when given some shade during the afternoon.

Zones 3-8. Surface sow seeds on to a moist seed medium and cover tray with glass or plastic. Germination in 1-3 weeks at F 65. It is helpful to use lighted days (but keep out of very bright direct sunlight -- the sun can dry the pots out quickly while the seedlings have no roots) and dark nights. Most plants will bloom the second year but if started early some blooming the first year.

                    'Clustered Bellflower' (glo-me-RAH-ta)

Name means clustered in reference to the flowers, which are produced in dense clusters and ther ends of the stems. This is a shorter growing strain that reaches a height of 6 to 12 inches in height. Use in full sun and part shade. Easy to grow plants flower for a long time in summer and with some dead heading will flower till frost. Clump forming plants can be divided in spring or after flowering. I am told this will produce dark blue colored flowers. To get a variety of flower colors in the shorter size that C. glomerata acaulis comes in, grow them next to C. glomerata 'alba' and save seed. Plants flower the same year sown if started in early spring. Does well in any typical garden soil that is not wet. When happy, will self seed but for me has never been a problem.

Zones 3-8. Surface sow on moist seed medium and cover tray with glass or plastic. Germination in 1-3 weeks at F65. It is helpful to use lighted days (but keep out of very bright light) and dark nights.
