    Lilium canadense grows 2 to 5 feet tall with down facing bell-like flower with wide flaring mouth. Lilium canadense has lance shaped, mid green leaves that are arranged in whorls around upright stems. The flowers are yellow, orange or occasional red, and are slightly scented. The trumpet shaped flowers have recurved petal tips and are spotted with dark red/maroon spots. Blooms in late spring to mid summer. Performed best in a moist but well-drained soil with a neutral to acid pH, in full sun or light shade.

      Formosa Lily (LIL-ee-um: for-MOH-sa-num) Liliaceae:

      Long, white trumpets in late summer, that look like an Easter lily. Lilium formosanum has maroon shading on the outer sides of the trumpets. Will bloom the first year with an early sowing. Lilium formosanum grows up to 7 feet tall. The flowers are scented and produced on long stems which may need staking. The stems have long, thin grassy leaves. Generally easy to grow, doing best in full sun in well draining soils that hold some moisture in the summer, but the soils need to be dry in the winter.

      Zones 7-9. 5 and 6 maybe, if planted deeply.

      Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours. Sow by covering the seeds thinly with soil medium mixed with some sharp sand or grit and keep at 65-74F. Germination is spread-out over many months.

          Martagon Lily or Common Turk's Cap Lily (lil-EE-um: mart-UH-gon) Liliaceae:

          Lilium martagon does best in a humus enriched soil that is well draining and holds some moisture but is never wet. Takes a good amount of shade and can be grown in full sun too as long its not hot and dry in the spring. The tall stems grow 3 to 5 feet tall and have very fragrant, pure white flowers that are strongly reflexed. They have the classic Turk's-Cap type blossoms with 20-30 per stem in a cascading pyramidal shape. Easy to grow plants once established. They look nice coming up out a collection of Hosta or planted in drifts of three across the landscape. These seeds will produce plants with white flowers that especially stand out in the shade garden. Use in moist but well drained soils.

            This clump-forming species has stiff upright stems with lance-shaped leaves. It blooms in summer, producing racemes with up to 30 large, nodding, fragrant, broadly trumpet-shaped yellow flowers. The flowers are flecked and spotted with maroon inside the throats. The outer sides of the tepals are tinted purplish brown. A lime-tolerant species that grows well in fairly heavy soils. Plants are drought tolerant and grow best under sunny conditions.

              Philippine Lily

              A tall plant often over 6 feet, with large, trumpet shaped pure white colored flowers. Plants blooming late summer into late fall with 6 or more flowers per stem. The flowers tend to face downward and are scented. Best in full sun, but will grow in some shade if given support. Self seeds and seedlings look like thick grass blades the first year.

                Regal lily or Kings Lily

                Plants have trumpet-shaped flowers held out horizontally at the top of the stems in clusters of 2-20. The flowers are 6 to 7 inches long with the white petals on the inside with a yellow base and pink to purple tinted on the outside. In a few years this seed will produce plants with wide, oval, wine red bulbs up to 5 inches wide. Best used in the ornamental garden. Were they have no special requirements regarding soil type if it is rich and well draining in the fall and winter. They can be used from lightly shady to full sun exposure. Plants will grow 3 to 6 feet tall.
