Asclepias speciosa is a great choice for a butterfly garden. It is a spreading perennial growing 3 to 4 feet tall. Asclepias speciosa has broad, light green, hairy leaves and round umbels of fragrant soft pink flowers. The flowers are star-shaped and attract many bees and butterflies. Summer blooming.

Soak the seeds of Asclepias speciosa in hot water for 36 hours, changing the water with fresh water every 12 hours. Surface sow the seeds and very lightly sprinkle some soil medium on them but do not completely cover the seeds, light is needed for best germination, which should start in 1 to 3 weeks at F 75. About half the seeds maybe dormant. If little germination, transplant seedlings and move the pots to 25-39F for 6 weeks. Keep sown seed for one year, some may germinate the second year.
