Thick rounded stems with toad-lily like foliage (Could call it "corn-like" too) and brilliant purple colored flowers that look like orchids. The two lipped flowers are almost 2 inches long and have white to pale violet markings inside. Plants grow 12 to 16 inches tall, blooming late in the growing season. tuberous "roots" that form slowly spreading clumps. Plants should flower the third year after sowing. Grow in an open woodland setting with humus rich, moister retentive but well draining soils. They do not like to grow in hot soils, so provide a thick mulch to keep the plants cool.

Zones 6-9. Germinates best under warm moist conditions, use 78F and a moist but not wet soil medium. Takes about 2 to 6 weeks. Very helpful to soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours first. Native from the Eastern Part of the Himalayan Mountains.

This 2002 All America Selections winner is something new for those that love these heavy blooming plants for the sunny boarder. Unique, fully double and semi-double flowers are 3 to 4 inches wide and come in shades of bronze, red, brown, orange and yellow atop well branched plants that reach a height of 20 to 30 inches. Useful as a cut flower too. Some plants may overwinter, and some self seeding occurs too- though the diversity of colors is reduced. 'Swamp Coneflower' or 'Tall Coneflower' or 'Cabbage Leaf Coneflower' or 'Great Coneflower' Asteraceae: Large yellow flowers on plants that grow 6 to 9 feet tall. Bright Golden-yellow colored petals hang from tall brown cones. The basal rosette of foliage is large (2-4 feet wide) and the leaves have a waxy blue color.
