'Mexican Hat' or "Dwarf Yellow Mexican Hat' or 'Upright Prairie Coneflower' or 'Long-headed Coneflower' or 'Columnar Prairie Coneflower' Asteraceae:

Some all yellow flowers but most with purplish-brown with yellow at the apex. Drought tolerant plants that grow 1.5 to 2.5 feet tall and put on a good display even under hot conditions. Plants will bloom the first year with an early sowing.

'Chinese Foxglove'

Carmine-red colored flowers that have yellow throats. Plants grow 3 to 4.5 feet tall, they spread by way of stolons to form large colonies. This species does not like real hot conditions, but is very drought tolerant once established. Attractive as a cut flower that blooms in late spring and again in summer. The flowers are somewhat bell shaped and look some-what like a Fox Glove flower. It differes from Digitalis flowers by having petals that have petunia like texture and the mouth has a small upper lip of two petals and the larger lower lip has three petals. Grow in full sun were summers are on the cool side and in part shade were summer are hot. Best growth and flowering occurs in moist, rich soil - but these conditions al;so promote the greatest spread, so give the showy plants plenty of space.

Thick rounded stems with toad-lily like foliage (Could call it "corn-like" too) and brilliant purple colored flowers that look like orchids. The two lipped flowers are almost 2 inches long and have white to pale violet markings inside. Plants grow 12 to 16 inches tall, blooming late in the growing season. tuberous "roots" that form slowly spreading clumps. Plants should flower the third year after sowing. Grow in an open woodland setting with humus rich, moister retentive but well draining soils. They do not like to grow in hot soils, so provide a thick mulch to keep the plants cool.

Zones 6-9. Germinates best under warm moist conditions, use 78F and a moist but not wet soil medium. Takes about 2 to 6 weeks. Very helpful to soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours first. Native from the Eastern Part of the Himalayan Mountains.

This annual grows 2 to 3 feet tall and produces bright yellow rays. The flower heads are similar to those of black-eyed Susans. Native from Kansas to Texas and Georgia, grown for naturalizing in the landscape or in meadows and along roadsides. The foliage is elongated with a bluish color; they also have a glaucous coating. The leaves “clasp" around the stem at the base. The yellow outer ray petals droop as the flowers age, the middle of the flower heads have cylindrical black center cones that are elongated up to 2 inches in length. Flowering begins in June and last much of the summer. Grows in most soil types, but it generally prefers a moist site. Dry soils produce less attractive flowers. Natural stands of plants are usually found in areas with ample soil moisture most of the summer. Grow in full sun.

Germination starts in three weeks at 72ºF. Surface sow the seeds, light needed for best results. Germination is spread out over many weeks. If no germination use a cool period of three weeks.

A little taller than 'Goldstrum' with more orange to the yellow flowers and blooming a little later. The petals are a little thicker too with a more flattened cone. This variety of R. fugida has larger flower heads - up to 3" across - than other varieties; and it has leaves that are wider and become only slightly smaller as they ascend the stems. A nice selection for the sunny border or even better yet - as a mass planting. Some flowers the first year, but best blooming the secound and third year.
