'Red Baneberry' or 'Snakeberry' (a-TEE-a: RUB-ra) Slow growing, long lived shade plants with white flowers followed by umbel like raceme heads of loosely held red berries. Does well in deep shade under trees in humus rich, moisture retentive, cool soils with a pH of 6 to 7. Native from Eastern and Northern North America. All 8 species of Actaea are poisonous but the fruits are not tasty so the chances of any one harming them selves by accident is slim. Plants grow two feet tall and bloom in mid spring and the berries are green in color until midsummer, they then become bright red. Nice clump forming plants in cultivation, upright growing with attractive foliage that looks somewhat like an elderberry, thus the genus name from the Greek word 'aktea',meaning 'Elder'. Plants take three years of growth to reach flowering size. One of the few woodland native plants that still looks good in August.

Zones 3-9. Sow seed into a plastic bag with moist seed mix and keep at 60-70ºF for 4 weeks, move to the fridge for 6 weeks, then move to 50F were germination should occur. Sometimes germination may take two years- so do not discard seeds trays if no germination. The seeds have been stored cool and moist and should be sown as soon as you recieve them and not allowed to dry out.
