Allium - Onions

Large group of bulbous plants with over 600 species. Most of the species are from thenorthern Hemisphere with 96 species in North America. A largenumber are grown asornimental plants in the rock gardens and perennial boarders. They can be fpund growing in many diffrent habitata from dry to moist. Most are sun loving but a few are shade plants. The seeds of most Allium species are what are called "Cold Germinators" or "Frost Germinators" For the seed to germinaet it needs a few weeks of warm moist conditions to take in water and oxygen. Then the seeds need a number of weeks of cold to break down chemicals in the seed that prevent germination. Once those chemicals are gone the seeds will germinate. The seeds have been stored at 34F, and some times some of the seeds will germinate during the warm period -- those seedlings should be removed before moving the rest of the seeds to the cold. The seeds should be sown onto a moist seed medium and left at room temperature for 4 weeks, after 4 weeks they should be moved to 25-39F for 6 weeks, were many of the seeds will germinate, after 6 weeks move to F 55 were the rest of the seeds will germinate in a few weeks.

A great 'perennial' ornamental onion with medium purple blue flowers in good sized umbels on 20 inch stems. The foliage has a nice twist to it and plants work well in the perennial boarder or the rock garden, easy to grow and long lived. Flowers are great for cutting. Plants bloom in early to mid summer over a 3-4 week period. Does well in most soils. This Allium stays attractive all growing season, the foliage is still lush in late summer. Many plants in this genus go summer dormant at flowering or just before, but not this species. Mixes well with Coreopsis and Sedum'. Plants will grow into nice clumps that can be divided every few years, they will also self sow a little if the ground is open but not in a weedy way. Clump forming plants with iris-like rhizomes (a rhizomatous onion).
