Althaea

The genus althaea includes the Hollyhocks which are biennial or perennial plants of the Mallow family. The species are chiefly coarse growing plants with large rough leaves and tall upright flowering stems. A. rosea from which the Hollyhock has sprung, are showy garden flowers and many different flower colors exist, some are double. They are mostly short lived perennials, depending on the breeding, the single flowering forms tending to be the longest lived.
The other wild species are generally more aggressive and less showy but are interesting for diversities sake. The plants thrive in almost any situation or soil, they bloom in summer and early fall. Among “good” species to grow are A. officinalis and A. ficifolia . Most of the garden species come from southern and eastern Europe. The seeds are large and easy to handle, germination occurs in a few weeks and the seedlings are good sized. They develop a taproot, so transplanting is best done when the plants are small. The seeds can be sown where they are to be grown with good results.
