Alyssum
Alyssums are low growing hardy perennials and annuals. The white flowering, very fragrant annuals are much used for edgings window boxes and walkways. They are easy of culture and can be grown in any soil that is not overly wet, but they do best in loamy soild of moderate fertility. Seeds may be sown as early as the ground can be prepared in spring. The annuals plants will begin to bloom when 2 or 3 inches tall, and they continue to bloom until after the first hard frosts. The annuals form mats 1 to 2 ft across. The plants can be thinned out or transplanted to stand half a foot apart. Most selections are low growing and few are rarely more than a foot high. In the fall plants may be cut back and put into pots or boxes and they will bloom in the window. For best winter flowering, start the seeds in boxes or pots in August September or October. The hardy perennial yellow flowered Alyssums which are useful for prominent edgings and for rockwork and walls.
