'Large Forest Anemone' or 'Snowdrop Anemone'

Attractive, sometimes gently nodding, clean white colored flowers, that are somewhat fragrant. The plants start blooming in late spring and keep blooming for a number of weeks. The flowers are 1.5 to 2 inches wide with yellow stamens clustered in their centers and are held 8 to 15 inches or so above the ground atop the center of the plants. Plants form spreading clumps in open woodlands or fields. Grow in well-drained soils that are moist and rich in organic matter. Overly dry soils will retard good growth. Some re-blooming through out the summer and white fluffy seed heads produced after flowering. I find the leaves of the Anemones very appealing with their flowers held up above the foliage.

Zones 3-7 (8). Native from Central and Eastern Europe to the Caucasus region. Just lightly cover seeds and use 50-65F, with germination often in three weeks, if no results move to 26 to 39F for 6 weeks, then back to 55F. The first year plants spend most of their time developing a root system. If grown well can bloom the second year, but for most blooming occurs the third year. Very nice colonizers forming attractive displays in openly shaded locations.
