'European Ginger' (a-SAH-rum: oy-roo-PIE-um) ARISTOLOCHIACEAE.

Here is a lower growing plant than the one above. It reaches a height of 4-6 inches. The leaves are smaller and rounder with a very shiny almost glossy appearance. Much loved by those that use it as a ground cover in shade to sun. Plants are not fast growing but over a few years will develop into spreading clumps a few feet across. The stems carpet the ground in a mat and can be divided every few years to make more plants. The foliage is almost evergreen and persists throughout the winter. A very nice ground cover in a shady location, give it time to spread. The small tube shaped flowers are brown and held very close to the ground and add no real interest to the display but make for a nice 'curiosity.' The stems and roots have a distinctive scent to them.

Zones (4) 5-8 in Zone 4, use some winter mulch. Sow seed in a plastic bag with a table spoon of moist seed mix, keep at 73F for 45 days or more. Then place in the fridge for 50 days. Sow into a pot and use 40-50F. If no germination in 5 weeks, repeat the cycle from the beginning.

50 seeds.
