'Bats-in-the-Belfry' or ' Throatwort' or 'Nettle-leaved Bellflower' (tra-KAY-lee-um)

Name is derived from the Greek word for neck: trachelos. The name is in some way tied to the belief that this plant has medical properties, pertaining to the throat I would imagine. This is a nice tall plant up to 4.5 to 5 feet with large showy blue/violet flowers. Stems have a zigzag shape and along with the leaves have bristly hairs. Nice plants with a long blooming period. Younger plants will bloom until frost. Will self sow and plants are long lived and easy to care for and if dead headed will bloom until late fall. Plants have large white almost carrot like tap roots and are not invasive like many of the Campanulas can be. After flowering, cut back to prevent self seeding. Easy, making a nice show in light shade or full sun were soils are moist but well drained. Great as a naturalized planting along a wood edge or fence row.

Zones 4-8. Found over much of Europe and Asia.
