'Yellow Scabiose' or 'Alpine Scabious' (kef-a-LAH-ree-a: al-PEEN-a) Dipsacaceae:

The genus name is from the Greek word kephale, meaning 'a head' These clump forming plants have long wiry stems that can be 3 to 6 feet tall. The clumps have a spread up to 2 feet and plants fit in well mixed with shrubs and ornamental grasses. This species starts to bloom in late spring with Scabiosa like yellow flowers.

Zones 4-8. Use cool temps, some were around 41 to 55ºF, germination irregular, often taken place over a month or two.

'Giant Scabious' or 'Yellow Scabious' (kef-a-LAH-ree-a: gi-GAN-tee-a)

The species name Means 'Giant' or 'very large' This is a clump forming plant that is the largest of the genus, growing up to eight feet tall and three feet wide. The tall stems with few branches produce a number of 2 inch wide, soft butter yellow colored flowers. The basal foliage is large and deeply cut while the top of the plant is just flowers on long wiry stems. For its size it stands up very well and makes an impressive sight in the garden. Plant in fertile, well draining soils that hold moisture all season long in full sun or light shade. Plants will bloom the first year with an early spring sowing. Grows into good sized clumps that can be divided up in spring or late summer.

Zones 3-7. Native from the Caucasus and Siberia of Russia. Sow at 70ºF, if no germination in 3-4 weeks; move to fridge for 2-4 weeks.

Dipsacaceae

A good number of half globe shaped flowers in a off white to soft butter yellow color. Plants grow 3 to 4 feet tall with long thin stems over a rosette of low growing leaves. The long stemmed flower are nice as cut flowers. Plants have a semi-woody base.

Zones 4-8. native from Southern Europe and Northern Africa.
