Rarely offered, this cute Clematis is a Spring bloomer, with many, relatively large flowers that are up to 3 inches across or more. The flowers are pendulous, dangling off of the end of short flower stems. The blue flowers have white centers. A tough nice growing species that is easy to take care and long lived. Excellent for scrambling over & thru shrubs and other full-bulky perennials like Peonies. Most Clematis' like rich, loose soil with an allocation of compost every year. Plant them where their roots are shaded and the plants can grow up into the sun. Grows 4-7 feet tall.

This new Clematis has nodding, bell-shaped flowers on ten foot tall vines, blooms for months in summer. The flowers are 2 inches long and have reddish tinted bases and are a creamy yellow, pastel lemon color. Blooms all summer and into fall. After flowering attractive puff-ball like seed heads are produced and are quite ornamental too. If plants are pruned right after bloom ends early in the year, a second heavy flush of flowering occurs. This species blooms on blooms on old wood.

'Fragrant Virgin's Bower' Ranunculaceae:

A strong-growing climber reaching 12 to 15 feet tall and producing a dense clump of stems. The leaves are bright green and the 1 inch wide flowers are produced from July into October. The many small, pure white, star-shaped flowers are almond scented and cover the plants in white. In the fall and winter the plants are covered with silky seed heads. Use on fences, pergolas, arbors and walls. Use in a sunny position that is warm and sheltered from extreme heat and drying. The species name means something like 'a little flame'

Zones (4)6-9. Native from Southern Europe. Sow seed into a plastic bag with moist seed mix and keep at 60-70ºF for 3 weeks, move to the fridge for 6 weeks, then move to 50F: were germination should occur in 1 to 6 weeks.

'Tube Clematis' or 'Chinese Clematis or 'Bush Clematis' (KLEM-uh-tiss: he-ra-klee-i-FOl-ee-a)

Indigo-blue flowers atop three foot tall plants. A herbaceous perennial that does not twine round surrounding plants or structures. Small, tubular shaped, scented, flowers. The one inch wide flowers are produced in large clusters in the leaf axils. Blooms in July to September. After a few years of growth plants become thick and have a spread of three to four feet and have some nice large leaves. Best utilized as a plant that scrambling through other large perennials and shrubs. Sun to Light Shade. From Eastern China, Korea, Japan.

'Downy Clematis' Ranunculaceae:

Large flowers in many colors including light blue to dark blue, violet, pink, white and even a rose. Many of the flowers have a 'double' look to them. Grows 3 to 9 feet tall. Many flowers are produce in mid spring and look real nice on a short wire fence. A showy selection to try next to a fence post or trained up a brick wall- the spring and early summer flowers are replaced by attractive silver tailed seeds. Flowers can be produced on and off through out the summer into fall.

The species is native from China and Siberia. Germination in 20-30 days at 55 F. nights and 72 F. days. Darkness helps, so cover seeds completely when sowing. The seeds that do not germinate in response to the above regime, move to 35F for three weeks.

Small pale yellow colored flowers handing from vining plants, blooms from June to August. Another species in the Clematis tangutica group. From Siberia.

'Golden Clematis' or 'Old Man's Beard or 'Russian Virgin's Bower' Ranunculaceae:

Nodding yellow flowers cover this climber, after flowering is done the plants are covered in showy fluffy silver-white colored seed heads. Plants grow 8 to 12 feet tall and blooms late summer into late fall, flowering the first year. Older plants grow taller and do well growing on large structures and threw chain-linked fencing. Self seeds but seedings are easy to remove where not wanted. Nice in large pots. One of the easer Clematis species to grow from seed.

Native to western China and northern India. Germination in 20-30 days at 55 F. nights and 72 F. days. Darkness helps, so cover seeds completely when sowing. The seeds that do not germinate in response to the above regime, move to 35 F for three weeks.

'Traveller's Joy' or 'Old Man's Beard' (KLEM-uh-tiss: vy-TAL-buh) Ranunculaceae

A very tall (40+ feet, plants can some times have over 100 foot long stems) climbing vine with white flowers. The flowers are 3/4th an inch wide with greenish centers and stary stamens. Blooms mid summer on and in late summer and fall is covered with heads of large fluffy white seed tails. Does best in lime rich soils but tolerent of most well draining soils and can be grown as a climber that twins around the stems of other plants and supports or as a ground covering mat were there is nothing to climb on.

Zones 4-9. Native from Wales and southern England to Africa. Has become a pest species in New Zealand. Not for sale for the states of Washington and Oregon.
