[Gentiana alba]'Pale gentian' or 'Yellow Gentian' or 'Plain Gentian'

This native north American Gentian has creany-white flowers over semi-glossy medium to yellow-green leaves. Plants bloom in late summer and the flowers look very much like a bottle gentian. This species is more upright growing than G. andrewsii reaching a height of 2 feet. Nice plants for a moist prairie planting or in a mixed boarder. If you also grow A. andrewsii allow them to cross pollinate [Gentiana ×pallidocyanea] and self sow-the offspring will produce some very attractive plants with creamy-white flowers rimed in blue. Plants maintain an upright form too. Your seedlings will take two or three years to bloom. Surface sow seeds and use F 50, bright light will speed up germination, which can be spread out over a few months. Sow in pot and put in a large clear ziplock bag and keep outdoors in late summer or use 2-4 weeks at 68ºF, 4-6 months at 21ºF, move to 53ºF for germination. Surface sow seeds, bright light needed for best results. Long lived species that grows into a good sized clump with time. Zones 3-8. Native from Central and north central USA. Makes a nice dried flower too.
