Plants have many bright orange flowers that rise above a compact mound of glossy green foliage. Long blooming period. Grow in full sun to light shade, in well draining soils, plants do not like waterlogged conditions, which will cause root rotting. Prefers moist, fertile soils and cool summers, during hot humid periods plants struggle.

'Big leaf Avens' Rosaceae:

Small bright yellow flowers on top of 10 to 30 inch tall stems. Blooms in spring and early summer. Plants have large, deeply cut basal leaves, and upright flowering stems with five petaled flowers. Grow in part part shade, or were the summers are not hot, grow in full sun.

Native to Alaska south to Baja California; East in Canada to the Great Lakes region and Nova Scotia.

'Prairie Smoke'. (GAY-um. tri-FLOOR-um) ROSACEAE:

Early blooming prairie plants with pink-reddish flowers and wispy silver pink seed heads. This plant is native to the central states of the USA. Nice plants for a little short grassy area mixed in with Antennaria and Pulsatilla. Nice used as an edging or mixed in the rock garden. Plants flower 4-8' tall and form short ground hugging rosettes of pinnately dissected grayish green leaves that are 6' long. Leaves are softly covered in hairs. This GEUM Blooms in May-June. Great looking ground cover too. Plant in a fertile well drained soil in full sun. Does not like to be to wet in winter. Plants can be divided in the spring after flowering. flowers are not bright in color but are charming, once flowering is done silver seed tails are formed. These tails are long and in a mass they look like smoke rising up from the ground- hence the name 'Prairie Smoke' this is one of those native novelty plants, if your tastes run only to the bright and showy then it is not for you. But if you like different and unique plants to mix in here and there in your land scape-give this one a try.

Zones 3-8. Best sown with some moist soil and put for 6 weeks at 32-39F, move to 68F for germination
