Hordeum is a genus of grasses with 30 species of perennials and annuals, native from temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, and temperate regions of South America, and South Africa. One species, barley (H. vulgare) , is a major commercial cereal grain. Some species are nuisance weeds introduced world-wide by human activities while other species are endangered because to habitat loss. Hordeum jubatum or Foxtail barley is a perennial plant that is native to northern North America and adjacent northeastern Siberia. It escaped from cultivation and can be found world-wide in regions with temperate to warm climates. It is grown for its attractive inflorescences and infructescence.
