'Sword leaf Inula' (in-YEW-la: en-si-FOL-lee-a) ASTERACEAE:

The specie name means 'with sword like leaves'. Nice 1.5 inch wide, yellow colored daisy flower heads blooming from June to late summer. This genus is adapted to moist soils, but should not be grown in wet, soggy soils. They do very well in normal soil that is moisture retentive and well drained with an exposure that is in full sun to morning shade. Plants grow 1 to 2 feet tall and bloom for about six weeks. They are useful filler plants, not domineering in the landscape.

Yellow gold colored flowers with dark centers, plants grow 4 to 6 feet tall when in bloom. Best in moist but not wet soils in full sun to part shade. They do not perform well in dry soils were they wilt and do not develop the large attractive leaves. Blooms late summer, a showy addition when you need something large for the back of the border or as a specimen around a large rock. Plants have large leaves.

Zones 4-9. Germination takes a few weeks 66-75ºF. Surface sow seeds, light needed for best results. Germination can be spread out over a few weeks too.

Elecampane Asteraceae:

More or less upright growing plants to a height of 3 to 5 feet; the leaves are large and toothed, the lower ones stalked while the upper leaves clasp the stem. The yellow, daisy-like flowers are 2 inches wide and have many rays. Each ray is three-notched. The plants grow from thick, branching roots.

A small species with prostrate rosettes of foliage. A good subject for a rock garden. The stemless flowers pop up from the center of the mat-like clumps and grow maybe 4 inches tall. The flowers are in thick, yellow-gold disc shaped heads. The leaves have one prominent center vein and bluntly rounded ends. Plants spread-out about to about 8 inches wide. Used in rock gardens or as a container planting.

Native to China and central Asia and the Himalayans where it is found growing on rocky slopes.
